Re: Suggestions for a Choral Mass Setting

Doesn't have to be a capella, and I'm easy with either Latin or ICEL 2010. I wasn't thinking specifically in terms of something that had a congregational line. The choir is pretty secure with 4 part homophonic writing, but they struggle with polyphony due to the need to keep track during rests and l...

Suggestions for a Choral Mass Setting

One possible project I have in mind is to teach the choir a fully choral mass setting (at present we don't sing or know any). Leaving aside (please) discussion about whether this is or is not a desirable thing to do, I'm looking for suggestions for a general-purpose mass setting for a reasonably sec...

Re: Realising Bishop Alan's hope

Ah - terminology conflict - we use the Redemptorist handouts, too...I was assuming that the anathema was to be applied to those, also.

Re: Realising Bishop Alan's hope

I know the congregation will have the words of the response in front of them and will be following the verses and will thus know what to sing and when to sing it. I don't need to do anything to bring this happy situation about. (I don't have an issue regarding the Communion Antiphon, because our pra...

Re: Realising Bishop Alan's hope

We're drifting OT here, but I think you're overstating it Nick. A missalette is just another constraint on one's repertoire choices: one among many, of which the overriding ones are invariably the time and the skills of the people tasked with choosing, preparing and leading that repertoire. There is...

Re: Sede Vacante and the Liturgy

Achieving a form of words that can be understood and used by 'ordinary people' - who are certainly not a homogeneous bloc in our multicultural and highly mobile society - is an enormous challenge. One which the compilers of the present translation appear to have had no interest in meeting, albeit t...

Re: ' ... educating children in good liturgy?'

They have the notes in front of them...but what comes out of their mouths is mostly memory recall. BTW, the results to date in terms of musical quality aren't too great and I struggle with keeping them on task, especially the youngest - I've no training or qualifications to teach either music or jun...

Re: ' ... educating children in good liturgy?'

I think the key is repertoire - if the music is "childish" it will not serve them as they become young adults. Yes Yes Yes. I always find it odd that adults so often insist on forcing 'childish' liturgical music on children and are convinced that 'non-'childish' music is totally unaccessi...

Re: Tenebrae

The now-defunct Newman Singers sang Tenebrae every year from 1968 to 1999, most often in St Chad's Cathedral, otherwise in Catholic and Anglican churches in the Birmingham area - I hope the following may be useful. Tenebrae was originally a vigil service consisting of the Night Office and Lauds (Mor...

Re: Andrew Carwood

Well, a glance through a random 2 weeks-worth of St Paul's music list shows four items by living composers, so it looks (not really surprisingly) as though he is familiar with new repertoire relevant to his field. But an Anglican Cathedral DoM has a very specific job to do and it's not especially he...

Re: Extraordinary Form

My theory is that they used one of those predictive text apps as found on mobile phones and simply typed the Latin text in, thus ending up with whatever English word shares the largest number of leading characters with the Latin.

Re: Guide for Accompanying Mass

The issue with the musician who plays by ear is easily resolved if that musician can provide a list of hymns to the committee that they can accompany. - ? - as in "if you lot want any of these you can jolly well play them yourselves!" Ah the holes we dig with the politically delicate use ...
