Re: Cringe-making lines in hymns

. . . and what's that one with "when I fall on my face with my knees to the rising sun . . " - or have I got that wrong?

Surely I can't be the only one who remembers the deeply liturgical reason for the pre-midnight carols? - as told to me by an aged pp long since gone to sing around a different tree and in a better place - namely that in the days when licensing laws prevailed and when, within the church, regulations ...

There's a thread not very far back (last accessed mid October) with a job ad such as you may have in mind - someone associated with that might have some ideas. (If I knew how to do those link things I'd have given one.) Then there was another back in May for an MD for Leeds. If you have any contact ...

Just what is a "touching place" anyway? . . .

. . . and can anyone remind me of the difference between "Sentiment" and "sentimentality" (O Level English I think) and why one is good and the other is not?

Just asking :?

Mane Nobiscum Domine 17 Apostolic Letter for the Year of the Eucharist Oct '04 - Oct '05 That's the one - as long ago as that eh! - we don't seem to have got round to it just yet either. For those who don't have the time to (re?)read the whole document, here is the lead up to the actual exhortation...

The Liturgy Office produced a book called "With hearts and minds" which went through the Mass wrt GIRM in (I think) 6 sessions Good initiative - but that wasn't it. I'm sure I read something quite explicit along the lines of "it is to be hoped that parishes will organise a series of ...

GIRM revisited

Memory is letting me down again - do I recall from a number of years ago an exhortation that parishes might institute a series of study sessions on the then imminent GIRM? - where did it come from? (Rome? - Westminster? - Birmingham? - ?) - how's it gone where you are?

1) Don't you think the first consideration of what to sing should be the texts of the liturgy itself? 2) If you have to substitute other hymns for the set texts, . . . Aaaaaaaah! (That's definitely "Aaaaaaah!", not "Aaaaaargh!") Shouldn't that always be the first objective? - &q...

It would be a very broad genre indeed to include everything by all these composers. I would try and avoid classifying as much as possible. Well, I really wasn't trying to make a quality judgment - just to have a word or phrase to use in say the parish notices "Next Sunday's music will be thing...

It looks like an interesting composition - I was taken by the composer's note appended to the preview page. I'll have to reserve judgment until I can play it through - I don't have a keyboard near the computer and I'm not a good enough muso to "hear" the harmonies from the printed page (or...

seeking a genre

Now keep calm, everyone! I was just about to post this question before I stumbled upon the "spiteful drivel" thread and its associated link which rather put me off doing this for a while. This really is just a simple (naive, perhaps?) search for a shorthand to use in for instance meetings ...

been "off watch" for a while so a bit of a latecomer to this - have just followed the original link. They play in a different league over there, don't they! Among all the sound and fury I picked out one interesting little point: does anyone know if the text of the new missal has indeed bee...

Obvious really - what did I think "Amen" means? - time to switch on brain.

Re: Memorial Acclamations - Gregorian

I'm not sure what you mean by that. Do you mean "have a similar tune"? If you do, I don't know. I suspect Quaeritor is referring to the bishops' draft guide for composers which states that "settings of the Eucharistic Acclamations should offer the Sanctus, Memorial Acclamations and G...

Memorial Acclamations - Gregorian

Given that it is suggested that the Acclamations in the Eucharistic Prayer should be linked in thematic unity, does anyone know where to find settings of the Acclamations after the Consecration to "fit in" with De Angelis - better still, since the texts are known generally in English and r...
