Can playing the organ make you deaf?

In another post oopsorganist asked this question. In my case I have lost hearing in my right ear but I do not think it is because I have played the organ for so many years. It is just anno domini! The thought of life without music is unbearable so I have hearing aids. This at least spares me from ha...

Sung grace

Ar the Methodist musicians annual conference, everyone sings a verse of a hymn as a grace in glorious harmony! "Guide me O thou great Redeemer" with its line about Bread of heaven was particularly suitable. Also "Immortal invisible" and "Praise my soul". I well remember...

Start of Advent

Summer school with kangaroosies - perfect for the concert mcb! Don't miss the superb St John's advent service on Radio 3 BBC website - it's only on until Sunday I think. Lucky you edbowie attending York Minster services! Isn't it wonderful how "Wachet auf" and "Lo he comes" immed...

broadcast evensong

I read on another strand that the BBC plan to move Choral Evensong from Wednesday to Sunday. I do hope they place it early in the evening for the benefit of devotees who go to Vespers or Evensong! I find it very helpful to be able to listen to it on the website but I wish it was on there longer than...

Mum and Dad

On Sunday January 28th at 3 p.m. Mum and Dad's ashes will be interred at St John's, Auckland Road, Upper Norwood. This is a splendid Pearson Anglican church with a fine Lewis organ where they worshiped when visiting us. Singers rehearse at 2 p.m. and the memorial Mass will be at 3 p.m. All welcome b...

Westminster cathedral

Just reading this topic reminds me to say how blessed I am to be part of the liturgy at the cathedral! And yes we do have Celtic Alleluia occasionally at Saturday 5.30 p.m. Mass. I too marvel at the organist's ability to follow the celebrant's wayward pitch. Not to mention fantastic improvisations -...

My Mum and Dad

Thank you all for your prayers. My Mum passed away peacefully on the Monday after we arrived. She really wanted to be with Dad - they had been married for 65 years and never apart. She said she had No regrets and was so happy. The double funeral was very beautiful and the music and liturgy were as D...

my Dad's funeral

Today we set off to travel to Sydney for my Dad's funeral. He would have been 86 today and he and Mum celebrated 65 years of happy marriage this year. He played the organ for 61 years! BUT he knew that the Eucharist and having faith and love were more important than the singing and playing. Please p...

The Choir

Yes indeed Merseysider the shame of it! The kids at the school my children attended loved "Moses, you are the man" too. I wonder why? I don;t think it was ever sung in the parish church, even by the folk group. But I did teach them some traditional hymns too. It was worth enduring the rubb...

children's lectionary

Especially if it's the Hebridean Gloria, Dunstan and not that horrid Peruvian thing! Loved the bit about the boiler instructions. In the Anglican parish where I play, kids are not seen until communion time. The older ones do come in for the Eucharistic prayer. We then get the important ritual of sho...

Twiddly bits

I came a cropper last Easter Day by deciding on the day to use Colin Mawby's Hymns for occasions for the last hymn "Thine be the glory". The trouble was that I warned the choir but not the celebrant or congregation and I didn;t play the interlude clearly enough - it has a solo for tuba or ...

Washing of feet

Just had to comment that having my feet washed and then washing a stranger's feet at summer school this year during the liturgy was most moving and humbling. Musicians who play and sing in the liturgy miss out on this experience. We used to use Taize Mandatum then switched to Servant song which was ...

Gregorian chant

I was there too and really enjoyed it although I wasn't happy about Vespers being entirely in Latin or the style of the cantors' singing. But I'm a fan of Worth and Belmont! And I don;t like Naji Hakim's improvisations! Tsume your excellent remarks could form the basis of an article in M usic and Li...
