Re: New hymnbooks
I don't think there is a 'gold standard' - it's more a question of taking the good with the 'rest' and ignoring what you don't want. Some years ago I eventually decided on CFE - which ticked some boxes I was looking for. There is an awful lot in it that is simply a waste of space/paper IMHO - but at...

Re: "Choirs"
Good points Organist. It's the karaoke aspect and the associated poor vocal production that get me - all shouting, not singing.

Re: Funerals and autocrats
Indeed! Actually it was barely recognisable as he played it with so many ornaments (like a very very self-indulgent singer!) - but none the worse for that. That's maybe why I didn't recongise the going-out piece he played. BUt it sounded fine and did the job.

Re: Funerals and autocrats
Well said Oops! I have it in my will that I want a proper Requiem Mass then it doesn't matter what they do at the crem - they can't spoil it. BTW, to return to original topic about playing at funerals - I played for one this morning (a Mass) when a friend/relative of the deceased played the coffin i...

Re: Funerals and autocrats
The Purcell could have been Thou knowest Lord the secret of our heart. I sometimes play that.

Re: Communion under both kinds
Thank you everyone for all these (very full!) answers. It seems that there are some apparent contraditions in the various documents (and I wonder if this is deliberate). My personal view is that communion under both kinds should be the norm - unless there are good reasons (e.g. logistics) for not doi...

Communion under both kinds
I referred to this in a different topic - but it needs its own thread I think. What is your experience of communion under both kinds (or not)? When I went to Ireland 2 or 3 years ago I asked the presider (in a cathedral) why it was only under one kind and his reply surprised me - he said 'At the tim...

Re: Services of Word and Communion in the absence of a priest.
Sorry - new computer playing havoc! In fact, what I was typing has apparently disappeared. I'll start again. My original comment was to refer to the point made above (by I think Southern Comfort) that in services of the word and communion, it is under one kind only, unlike at Mass. I then made the p...

Re: Services of Word and Communion in the absence of a priest.
Sorry - that left too early (struggling with new computer which does things off its own bat) Re HC under one kind only and no peace greeting, I meant to say that when I asked a parishioner I was told 'it's Father's wish'. There's no answer to that.

Re: Services of Word and Communion in the absence of a priest.
I don't understand - if the Service of Word and Communion is pukka (and guidelines from the Liturgy Office would seem to suggest this) why should any diocese want to prohibit its use?

Re: Liturgical Tourism
I have been in France too - went to Mass at the cathedral in Avignon on Sunday 30th September. No choir but congregation sang reasonably well, led by the usual female cantor waving her left arm. Kyrie and Gloria from Missa de Angelis (no music or words provided but I was able to sing it from memory)...

Re: Antiphonal Singing of Latin Plainchant Mass Settings
From my mempory of the 'olden days' we all sang everything - as JW remembers - with choir leading and congregation following on to the best of their ability. It was later that I came across the antiphonal singing style - sometimes as men/women. Never mind the congregation swooping on Credo III, we u...

Re: Liturgical Tourism
Two recent experiences: Firstly - a Dominican Rite EF Mass on Sunday 12th August - better than the last EF Mass I attended because I could hear the words (when spoken aloud) and so was able to follow and did not get lost! Disappointed though that we were asked not to join in the responses (as the se...

Re: Liturgical Tourism
Re the 'people of good will' bit: Two points (1) Yes, 'people' is fine (see also la gente in Italian and les gens in French - we are not the only language with a truly non-gender-specific noun) and could have been used in other places! and (2) how do other languages translate the 'of good will' bit?...
