Re: Pipe Organs and Organists - Dying out?

Several off hand reactions to all these posts: [1] If you live in Lancashire and enjoy Pipe Organs why not join the Preston and District Organ Society (PDOA)? [2] Blackburn Cathedral has an excellent series of Organ recitals on most Wednesday lunchtimes on their enormous instrument. [3] Yes, I agree...

Re: Incidental Music for Mass

Again, should not this entire section be reclassified under 'Core repertoire' or, if this is too incidental, under 'Sounds Off'. Is this not more of a musical subject rather than a liturgical one? On the other hand, if one moves away from repertoire selected on largely musical grounds and looked at ...

Should not this entire discussion be reclassified/positioned under the section 'Core Repertoire'?

Re: Parish Music in an age of dwindling resources

Just a little more development of the ideas I put forward in my last post: Cooperation between a local parish and (for example) the local diocesan cathedral. :There tends to be something of a division between the two these days (perhaps there always has been). Yet, if parish resources are to be maxi...

Re: Parish Music in an age of dwindling resources

Picking up on some previous points and adding some more: [1] I am not sure whether 'folk' musicians necessarily have a limited repertoire. A key factor here may be that it is very much an oral tradition. However there are plenty of oral traditions with enormous repertoires of music handed down. Even...

Re: Parish Music in an age of dwindling resources

Yes, all that Paul says is true. However it should not mean that instrumental resources - assuming they are there - should not be used. Likewise, if you do have a skilled arranger/composer, then there is every reason to use them. Note that with practice such techniques can be developed and improved....

Re: Parish Music in an age of dwindling resources

Just some random observations: If you think Catholic resources (human, financial, others) are dwindling, wait till you see the Anglican church, especially in rural areas like mine (average congregation on a sunday morning where I work is about 20!). Possible solutions/blockages: [1] Belatedly the An...

Re: Gloria

Small correction needed to my last message. Laudate of course gives the hymn text version only; not the more or less precise metrical paraphrase. I found this in my copy of Hymns Old and New No. 705 edited by Christopher Tambling.

Re: Gloria

Are we just talking about the use of a sung Gloria at Nuptual Masses or all Masses? If the former, the problem with all congregational singing is that you are likely to have a mixture of Catholics and non-Catholics in the congregation: so there is a case for using pre 2011 texts as these will allow ...

Re: Percussion

Yes, percussion can be very loud; but one should be careful not to 'throw the baby out with the bathwater'. Percussion can be handled delicately and sensitively - above all it is about 'colour' - and the variety of instrumental 'colours' it can offer is almost limitless (anyone with any imagination ...

Re: Laity squeezed out?

Always remember that Catholic congregational singing - at least by reputation - has often not been as wholehearted as in Protestant denominations. This is especially true in the North of England; where I have encountered congregations who point blank refuse to sing or attempt to sing anything they t...

Re: Mass setting by Gordon Rock/other Masses

I think the bottom line is not so much what liturgist officials in the Vatican have to say but what answers the needs of congregations on the ground. Almost certainly this is not the official Catholic position; but at the end of the day, any religion (and its associated forms of worship) must answer...

Re: Mass setting by Gordon Rock/other Masses

Yes, I like the Israeli and other Gordon Rock Masses too. They are simple and user-friendly. The trouble is that, because they alter the texts, they fall foul of the 'liturgy correctness' brigade (i.e. protagonists for an 'authentic liturgy'). Fortunately, since the accession of the present Pope, su...

St Thomas More group. Sorry not to respond before. Here are the key features: [1] Group of composers associated originally with the St Thomas More Centre for Music and Liturgy (London) in the 1980s. Included composers such as Paul Inwood, Stephen Dean and Bill Tamblyn. [2] Technical aspects of their...

Re: Do not be afraid.

The key with hymns of this type is to arrange the accompaniment in such a way that it provides a regular pulse. This keeps everyone singing together. Technically this involves reorganising the harmony, by employing a higher proportion of inverted chords. In general, with relatively modern hymns of t...
