Re: Easter Vigil - when did you start and finish?

Since I started this thread, we have a new PP whose liturgical sensibilities are more akin to my own. He has an app that tells him when "Civil Twilight" is. So it looks like our Vigil will start at 9pm.

I am a much happier bunny.

Re: Communion Processionals – Revived

The post-Communion silence is very important. In fact, prayerful silence and opportunities for reflection at various stages of the Mass is one thing that we have also been working on.

Re: Communion Processionals – Revived

The problem with longer refrains is trying to memorize them without having to keep looking at the words. For me, one of the great things about processional chants, whatever style they are in, is not having to open a hymnal, music sheet or whatever. When in the pews, I always find having to search th...

Re: Communion under both kinds

The 2004 Instruction Redemptionis Sacramentum has: “[102.] The chalice should not be ministered to lay members of Christ’s faithful where there is such a large number of communicants[189]that it is difficult to gauge the amount of wine for the Eucharist and there is a danger that “more than a reaso...

Re: Hymns that conflict with Catholic doctrine.

Taking up JW's first point, different censors say different things. The principal problem appears to be that there is no possibility of dialogue with the censor actually deputed to do the work in a particular instance, even if another theologian provides you with a different opinion. Not only is di...

Re: Services of Word and Communion in the absence of a priest.

I hate to say it, but it looks to me as though clericalism is to blame again. A matter of denying people Communion unless a priest is present. And that priest must be celibate, male and have undergone 7 years or so of training. Clericalism and the damage it is doing to the Church is something that ...

Re: Services of Word and Communion in the absence of a priest.

I am going to go out on a limb here and say that I have never been very comfortable with Services of Word and Communion during the week - they feel to me as being "Mass-light", following almost the precise pattern of the Mass but 'without the bit in the middle'. For a great many Catholics,...

organist wrote: Thu Jun 07, 2018 9:19 pm A tricky one as many attending will not be church goers. At Westminster cathedral there is silence during the actual confirmations.
I was assisting with a Confirmation Mass in north Wales - the Bishop of Wrexham also likes silence during the confirmations.

Re: Hymns for Confirmation?

From the "contemporary end of the spectrum" we have used:- " Veni Sancte Spiritus " (Taizé) during the Sacrament itself. " Be still, for the presence of the Lord " during the Presentation of the Gifts. " Jesus, lead us to the Father by your Spirit " (by Sam Ha...

Re: Easter Sunday morning Masses

Paschale Solemnitatis is very clear about this. There is no "pastoral provision": ‘The entire celebration of the Easter Vigil takes place at night. It should not begin before nightfall; it should end before daybreak on Sunday’. This rule is to be taken according to its strictest sense. Rep...

Re: Easter Sunday morning Masses

Despite the great success of last year's Triduum liturgies and - so far as I can tell - the universal appreciation of them, our PP has decided to revert to a pre-darkness start time for the Vigil. So, once again proving that it is easier to negotiate with a terrorist than a liturgist, I'm off on ret...

Re: Responsorial Psalm

Most of the time we use John Ainslie's "Sing the Psalms Simply" which does, in the main, live up to its title. As such, we can share out Psalmist duties. Personally, I think one or two of the responses would benefit from more melisma - but I guess that the title of the book may then need ...

Re: Clapping at the end of a carol service

At the end of my Camino, last year, at the end of the Pilgrims Mass in Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, there was even applause - from both the nave and the sanctuary - for the swinging of that rather silly Botafumeiro! It would not have been out of place in Barnum's Circus!! My main concern ...
