Re: More from Mgr Wadsworth

There is a lot to be disagreed with in the good Mgr's article. The first point "The entire liturgy had a ‘performance' quality to it, with the assembly as the principal focus. This was borne out by the fact that musical items were frequently greeted with applause." is interesting, and I ev...

Re: Congregational singing of hymns

If anyone has any specific suggestions about a good church to attend which has good congregational singing I would be very grateful to hear. I know nothing about London, but can sympathise with your explorations: when I realised that I would be staying in a certain west-of-Ireland city for longer t...

Simply hymns for beginner guitar players

I'm hanging out with a new, multi-cultural (1/3 immigrant), young (don't have stats, but LOTS of kids) parish in Ireland. Limited resources, big on commitment to the idea that music is intrinsic to Catholic worship, that the primary choir is the entire gathered assembly, and that we don't want just ...

Re: Kevin Mayhew

I'm pretty sure that a proposal of the "set of hymn books and accompany materials" size would need approval from the Finance Committee - AFAIK, the one parish body whose decisions cannot be overruled by the PP.

Re: Performing rights

Patty Smith Hill died in 1946 which would normally mean that, under UK law, the piece would be in copyright until 2016. However, I believe that, for some reason, it's in copyright until the 2030s in the US. US copyright law is a little different for works created pre 1978: their copyright expiry da...

Re: First Mass in new translation: so how was it?

A small report from the west of Ireland to make you all feel better: At the liturgy meeting before the first Mass where we were supposed to start using the new translations, I told them I'd heard that the new Gloria and Creed would be printed in this weeks leaflets. Mentioned some things I'd read he...

Re: And if you thought Bring Flowers of the Rarest was bad..

I know it's two years later, but I'm being asked for the same thing. Any clues (either in public or PM) most welcome. I'm an administrator, not a musician, so not passing any judgement on the quality (or otherwise ) of the tune. The lyrics that I've seen so far do less than nothing for me - but it's...

Re: And so we start anew ... but does anyone know when?

Based on receiving a final text in July, the proposed plan was to implement just the Order of Mass from the beginning of September 2011, with the rest of the Missal starting on the 1st Sunday oi Advent 2011. However, it now looks as if the final text may not arrive until October or possibly even De...

phrase to name the translations

I'm looking for short-yet-accurate phrases to distinguish between the English translation of the Mass that we are using now and the English translation that we will be using whenever-in-the-future. I want to avoid "old" and "new", because it causes confusion with the "old&qu...

Re: Wedding Planner Publication?

What are these CD-ROM things of which you speak? Seriously - a publication like that sounds like a fantastic resource, but with the number of weddings it would probably need to survive for quite a while (I'm thinking 5-10 years) to pay for itself, by which time CD-ROM's will probably be like floppy ...

Re: Teaching the new Mass settings (including MacMillan)

My understanding is that in most countries, copyright law means that even MAKING a recording of a tune that is copyright requires a licence. (I think it's what they call a "mechanical licence" - could be wrong about the term.) Publishing it on a website requires a different sort of licence...

Re: New texts (Mass, Lectionary, psalms, musical settings etc)

...so if I want to compose my own Mass settings using the new ICEL texts and (who knows?) send them to a publisher, do I need to get permission from ICEL? and are they inclined to grant it? And what about settings that "emerge", don't get sent to a publisher, but enter common use anyway. ...

Re: New translation

Am I the only one who thinks it's odd that the recognitio has been issued, even though (allegedly) "The text is still undergoing final editing by Vatican officials at this time." Also, Has anyone actually seen ICEL's DVD? Beautifully described here: /www.becomeonebodyonespiritinchrist.org/...

Re: New translation

As I understand it, Recognitio has now been granted for the whole of the new translation of the Roman Missal. Yes, possibly — but no official confirmation of this as yet. In any case, it would only be recognitio for a generic universal text, rather like the generic text of the General Instruction o...
