Re: New Pope
Didn't St Paul have something to say on this subject. Remind me, someone.

Re: Pope Francis' installation in his cathedral
The entrance song won't be a problem: the f is five bars in, and they'll be at least a minor third flat by then.

Re: Making time for prayer before Mass
Hare is right in some circumstances. The idea of the Angelus before Mass does not appeal at all. Surely exposing the Blessed Sacrament is more eucharistic? I always try to play a suitable organ prelude to match the season so In Eastertide it can be loud and joyful. I have a nice prelude especially ...

Re: Making time for prayer before Mass
I've found that one way to get a prayerful quiet before mass starts is to play something very softly - almost too quiet to hear (on mandolin or guitar in this case) . This seems to discourage the causal chatting that we get otherwise. As regards a practise with the people before mass - I find as a ...

Re: Pope's resignation
I will stick to "Full in the panting heart of Rome" and miss out the last verse.

Re: Pope's resignation
I much admire the Pope for this decision. I suspect that it took a great deal of courage.

Re: What's wrong with "Holy God, We Praise Thy Name" ?
A fast skipping one. Try it at at least 120 beats to the minute, and use Rowsthorne's last verse ( Being an anglican he calls it Hursley, and slightly changes the rhythm, but you can easily change it back.) By the third or fourth time you use it it will bring the roof down - pitting your congregatio...

Re: Extraordinary Form
I like it - emphasises the fact that it is outside the ordinary.

Re: Extraordinary Form
I think you may be right. The standards of translation employed on producing English Liturgy have been appallingly low for the last half century. If anyone has any insights perhaps they would like to inscribe them on this plank...

Re: Glory be to thee O Lord Most High
"In excelsis" translates literally as "in highs", ie it is plural and not superlative. Whether a translator puts "the" in the English is a matter of judgement, but translating "excelsis" as "highest" is a step away from being literal. Does anyone kno...

Re: Extraordinary Form
Of course, in liturgy the opposite of "ordinary" is "proper". Now that would have been a good name for the Tridentine Mass.

Re: 50 (or more) years on - Sacrosanctum Concilium
I think that you have a very valid point here. Fr Game-Show-Host has chosen disobedience rather than observance. However, obedience can be empty. It is possible to say the words without any meaning. It is possible to perform the gestures so trivially that they look as though the priest is embarrasse...

Re: 50 (or more) years on - Sacrosanctum Concilium
Peter Jones wrote:...How about "fully and consciously acting in the person of Christ"?...
That must surely apply to all forms and rites of Holy Mass. Do you have any practical advice to priests about how to achieve that desirable end, and to the laity on how to recognise that the priest has achieved it?

Re: 50 (or more) years on - Sacrosanctum Concilium
Although I have known a few people put off the church by Humanae Vitae most are put of by the banality of the new mass. Sorry, Nazard, but I'm afraid I have to say a "Poppycock" and say it very loudly. We seem to have different experiences. I have noted yours. The problem is to come up wi...

Re: 50 (or more) years on - Sacrosanctum Concilium
...If the first meaning is the one intended. then lacking gorm (i.e. lacking someone seriously deprived in intelligence) would be a good thing. If the second, then this may mean that the Mass is boring. It was the second meaning which I intended. The first I have never heard. It surprises me that a...
