Aw c'mon guys - you're surely just setting a trap for gullible old fools like me - the clue's in the text - " . . the encircling gloom" . . "the night is dark . . ". In my best lecturese:- the imagery is of an at first reluctant acceptance of guidance through darkness - "nig...

..but if you meant "In 1930 the SSG took a lead on the chant; maybe it's now time once again for it to take a lead [on other matters]", then that begs a different question. Aaaaaargh - surely "poses" or "raises" a different question? - (to "beg the question" ...

Hmm - seem to have mastered those little face things, but not the formatted quote. Is it written up anywhere?

[quote="nazard"]There are a few places in the mass where there are phrases with no verb where you would expect a sentence with a verb. "Dominus vobiscum" is an obvious one . . . "Happy Christmas" . . "Good Morning" . . "Good health!" . . hardly a Lat...

No altos eh? I offer this with some trepidation - expecting the devout to accuse me of offering the Lord "second-best" and the musical purists to accuse me of cultural vandalism - but . . . does it really matter? Of course you yourself will feel that the result is dreadful, and the other p...

Have just had modest success with "Jubilate Deo" - Lassus - CPDL - commendably brief (2 pages) - neither "Exsultate" nor Palestrina, but it might suit your requirements.

"Aequum . . " eh? - not sure if my Latin is up to this discussion, but has anyone thought to compare "Vere dignum et justum est, aequum et salutare . ." which was usually translated with a little more strength than " . . truly meet and right, availing to salvation and oh-ok-...

Help!!

How did I manage to post that last one all in red - thought I was just saving it to revise later - or is it only in red when displayed on my computer?

Apologies to all for continued technical ineptitude!

Originally - tho' I don't quite know when that was - there was no "response" (It always seemed odd to me that having decided not to acclaim "Alleluia" during Lent we should subsequently decide to replace it with a more-or-less literal translation, or at least one that conveys the...

docmattc wrote: It is incidentally this document, not just CTM which stresses that the choir are a part of the congregation. Why do you find this painful Quaeritor? It's good question - even if that's not really what I said (remember GIRM: " Among the faithful . . . the choir exercises its own ...

Thanks, Musicus - I was beginning to wonder if the iguana was a little code among the more established users meaning "we've covered all this before - let's talk among ourselves until these newbies go away" (javascript:emoticon(':)') Smile (You can see what I was trying to do with that emot...

So much to respond to! - sadly I've only time for one quick point at the moment, but "I'll be back!" Alan 29 wrote "the choir is there to lead (and only lead) the singing of the assembly" I have often encountered this sentiment, repeated with much assurance, but where does it com...

Thanks for the quote, mcb - makes my point even better than I had remembered. Pace , Nazard, - I do see the force of the argument from history (don't suppose there were many 64 foot pipes in the catacombs) but how old does a tradition have to be before it can be thought of as " the tradition&qu...

So why do we hate choirs then?

In another context (the “Folk Group” thread) I did a word search for "choir" through GIRM and CTM and the results were rather revealing. I've often sensed a sort of national prejudice against choirs, (even within this forum?) but I didn't realise it came "from the top" (!). T...

How much wisdom, Nazard - I only wish you could have a word with our PP who memorably announced to a meting of our Liturgy Committee: "I've had six parishes, and the choirs never needed to practice." Going back a bit, however, to Sidvicius's observation about the organ, "wot is held i...
