Re: Muzak for the Mass

It's better if there is a decent live musician or a group to play during those periods. For example a flautist plays during our Communion Procession and our group will play a verse of the Offertory hymn if needed. But you do need decent musicians.. For organists, I did a thread 10 years ago suggesti...

Re: I enjoyed that!

Of course, in the days of Martin Luther, before general literacy, everyone knew the chorales by heart. They probably sang them much more heartily and with greater enjoyment, for that! In Catholic tradition one could say the same about the Benediction hymns, O Salutaris Hostia, Tantum Ergo and Adorem...

Re: Proms

Sadly, organ recitals at the proms don't attract large audiences! I was at the St John Passion - brilliant, though I almost got blasted away by the organ on the last verse of 'Nun danket'! the St John is one of my favourite Bach works and it was a fitting end to the Reformation celebration. Samuel W...

Was at the Swing Prom last Sunday afternoon. Really impressed with Hiromi on the piano. So many jazz performers are consummate musicians.

Music Recitals

Just wondering! Do you use your church space for music recitals? They can be good community events, they can be fundraisers, they can bring people into the building. I'm thinking of concerts, carol services, schools events etc. Are music recitals something that more churches could engage with? They ...

Re: Pipe Organs and Organists - Dying out?

I don't know if members of this group are aware but Martin Cross, the East London organ builder, passed away unexpectedly a month ago. May he rest in peace. Martin was going to restore our organ. For fundraising we have a Hundred Club in place and a series of organ recitals. Individual donations are...

Re: First communion music

I wonder what many parents believe about First Communion. Has it become just a rite of Catholic passage? Otherwise it's difficult to understand why such a fuss is made when the there's little chance of the children receiving regularly on a Sunday.

Re: First communion music

Don't forget, a lot of people at FHC Masses have little connection with Catholicism. How can we reach out to them and their children because our efforts haven't really worked over the last 50 years or so? The Eucbarist is source and summit of all that we do, but it is also a place of sending. We are...

Re: Pentecost sequence.

The CC Sequence is optional. We've never used it.... We've never used it either. In fact CC is a dead duck in our parish, despite priests reinstating some form of procession from time to time. As regards the Pentecost Sequence, I'll mention the Veni Sancte Spritus by Walker and the one from Taize, ...

We've used this in the past. More reflective than joyful but it's simple and it works.

Re: Easter Sunday morning Masses

Played Handel's Hallelujah at the end of the Vigil. It may well become a tradition. People were joining in spontaneously and there was a round of applause at the end!
