Re: Responsorial Psalm

But the Lectionary/Missal is the agreed translation. You've missed my point again. It's an agreed translation, but not the only one. We have half a dozen agreed translations - but not all of them happen to be printed in the Lectionary. The fact that people have one translation in their hand missals...

Re: Responsorial Psalm

You surprise me. I thought the lectionary was the NJB translation. No. If you're using a three-volume Lectionary, it's JB. If you're still using the 1970 one-volume edition, if it's red it's JB, if it's blue it's RSV. The grail psalms are definitely paraphrases in their own right if the vulgate is ...

Re: Responsorial Psalm

This is an old chestnut. In the old days I would have strongly suggested to the catechist that s/he report me to the highest authority! These days I just say stick with what's written in the local missal because that way EVERYONE'S SINGING OFF THE SAME HYMNSHEET. It avoids confusion in their tiny b...

Re: Pipes versus digital

I have already posted re the virtues of Phoenix. The bottom line is whatever works for you. Yes, you have. And I already posted that the wonderful sounds on the demo CD are simply not reproduced in real life when testing Phoenix's installations. Once again, the question of direct feed versus record...

Re: Responsorial Psalm

The Lectionary makes it quite clear that you can use any response you like, as long as it's in the Lectionary. The wording in the Missal (i.e. Lectionary) can vary. For example, in GB we have no less than 6 translations of scripture approved for liturgical use: Douai, Knox, JB, RSV, NEB, NRSV, but n...

Re: Organists and communion

If it were physically possible for me to get to communion I probably wouldn't anyway, as i do not feel that, having been playing the organ and directing the choir, my mind has been totally on the spiritual/devotional side of the mass. A lot of people think this way, and in my opinion they are wrong...

Quite apart from their open necked shirts revealing torso halfway down to the belt, No I didn't! In fact I've watched the clip several times and failed to find these torso revealers. Yes, I don't know where they've gone. They (and their medallions) were there, after about 0:38, but seem to have bee...

The version of the tune with the passing notes is known as "Joanna". Sometimes you hear some passing notes but not others - a sort of "St Jenny-o".

Re: Romana Guardini's great mistake

Even more odd if they were having Communion on a Sunday afternoon if there had been Mass in the morning. I'm pretty sure it is not permitted to have a separate Communion service on a day when there is also Mass. Directory on Sunday Celebrations in the Absence of a Priest (Congregation for Divine Wo...

Re: Not sure about all this 'traditionalism'.

The two problems with By Flowing Waters are that it uses the NRSV translation of the psalms, which is pretty alien to us Grail folk, and that Paul Ford's word stresses do not always coincide with the melodic stresses (following the principle of what happens when you're using Latin) so that the antip...

Re: Romana Guardini's great mistake

We too do not sing Marian or Benediction hymns at Mass and occasionally their absence is commented on, exclusively by those over 70. We do have exposition on a Saturday morning culminating in Benediction, at which there is rarely anyone present. A group say the rosary and novena on a Wednesday even...

I'd hazard a guess at between 20 and 30, and would be very pleasantly surprised if it were more than this.

Re: Romana Guardini's great mistake

One of Romana Guardini's mistakes was not to be born a woman - then his name would have been Romana. It's actually Romano.
