Re: The disaster that is Christmas
I spent five years living at Ecce Homo Convent in the Old City of Jerusalem. It was the one place where I have lived where we could really celebrate Advent. Because we were a few Christian houses in the middle of the Moslem quater, not far from Jewish Israel, there was no Christmas hype in the media...

Re: Swine flu
In the last few weeks I have been to several different parishes for Mass, and I am surprised at the variety of Swine flu precautions. One parish had no sign of peace and no chalice, another had no sign of peace and communion under both kinds as usual (the argument being that there is sufficient alco...

Re: Words we don't quite get
"Guard and defend me from the foe malign, in deaths dread moments make me only thine...." I never quite understood what the Foe Malign was about - is it to do with a malignant cancer? And our death should not be a 'dread' moment, shouldn't it be our finest hour?

Re: Easter Vigil
I like 'I willl sing, sing to the Lord, Glorious his triumph' [by Teresa Brown - mod.] - it is easy to sing for congregations who don't have high powered choirs, and it is faithful to the words in the Missal. it is on her collection called the Watermark - more details on her web site - http://www.devinemusic.org.uk

Re: Unveiling the altar
When I lived in Jerusalem a few years ago, the house I lived in always had the liturgies of the Triduum, and many pilgrims in jerusalem would come. There was one Easter when we processed into a bare church for the Exultet and readings. During the Psalm after every reading different decorations were ...

Re: Churches I've visited this year
Walsingham. I went to the new Catholic Church in the village of Walsingham this summer - I think it has only been opened a few months. There was no liturgy going on, but I was very taken with the layout of the church. On entering the church, the first thing you come to is the Baptismal Font with wa...

Re: Vespers
The Bernadine Cistercian sisters at Hyning Monastery in Lancashire sing their office in English - they have beautiful, simple psalm tones and use the Grail pslams. I don't know who wrote them or if they are widely available, but it would be worth asking

Re: 'Yahweh' in Catholic liturgy
I agree with docmattc that YHWH is both a noun and a verb.. It is made of three Hebrew letters Yod, He and Vav which are consonants but can also act or sound like vowels as well (a bit like h or y in our alphabet). So Yahweh is both nown and verb, but more correctly, not quite a noun and not quite a...

Re: 'Yahweh' in Catholic liturgy
Instead of Yahweh I know you are near , I would sing Lord I know you are near (a long Lord) or O Lord I know you are near.... I happened to be in Walsingham this summer and at one of the Masses I went to we sang Yahweh is the God of my Salvation . I hadn't sung this for about 25 years, but I seemed ...

Re: Robing
Why would you want to robe? I suppose my question is 'What is the purpose of the choir'. Is it to lead the congregation in their singing? If it is, then why do you need to wear anything different from the congregation. If the choir is there to do a performance, then perhaps some robes that make them...

Re: Pentecost sequence
I have been to a beautiful Pentecost Vigil tonight. We started with an enthusiastic sprinkling rite to remind us of our baptismal responsibilities which we renewed at the Easter Vigil. Then we had the beautiful readings from Genesis, Exodus, Ezekiel and Joel, each one with an appropriate psalm, then...

In my parish, shortly after Girm came out, we used With Hearts and Minds as a basis for a series of sermons about the Mass over 6 weeks. We have used the same material to introduce the Mass in the Journey in Faith Group. I don't think anyone in the parish is discussing Girm at all now, except there ...

Marian hymns at Mass? I am sure there are different opinions about this one. In planning a Confirmation Mass last year there was a suggestion from one of the music group to have 'As I kneel before you' during Communion!!! When I asked why she was suggesting this hymn, she said that it was sung at he...
