Re: Musical accompaniment on Good Friday

It reinforces the starkness of the day - stripped altars, no entrance hymns, everything unaccompanied - this all makes for a heightened sense of the meaning of the liturgy. Exactly where I was coming from. The problem for us is: It helps that we've a good 4-part choir, so the harmonic integrity of ...

Re: Musical accompaniment on Good Friday

We'll be starting in silence, singing the psalm unaccompanied, and the hymns will probably be something like: When I Survey, O Sacred Head and O Come and Mourn during the veneration plus Crucem Tuam (in Ladate) for the choir. My Song is Love Unknown or The Royal Banners during communion. Behold the ...

Re: Musical accompaniment on Good Friday

Thanks, SC. That's obviously the article I was thinking of. Had a chat with the PP about it today. At the minute it looks like we'll be using the organ for the hymns but not for the chanted psalm, Gospel acclamation, and two short choir pieces during the veneration (Adoramus te by Giffen and Crucem ...

Musical accompaniment on Good Friday

Trying to get ahead with planning for Easter this year, and I'm toying with the idea of doing everything unaccompanied on Good Friday. Sorry if this has been discussed before . (I've a feeling it has been, but couldn't find it. If people would rather send me a link to previous topics that's fine.) I...

Re: The Preparation of the Gifts is not usually an appropria

On the issue of 'timing' at this point, 2 differing situations I have experienced: 1. Large parish, large congregation, offertory collection takes place and then brought forward with the gifts, incense is used, longish hymn plus considerable improvisation time. 2. Small parish, small congregation, p...

Re: The Preparation of the Gifts is not usually an appropria

I wasn't aware of that bit of advice from the Leeds Diocese. To me, it reads like one person's thoughts on the matter rather than any sort of directive. I totally can see the point of mixing things up, especially to give people a chance to watch the action of the Mass more closely, pray, reflect, et...

Re: The Preparation of the Gifts is not usually an appropria

I think the preparation of the gifts can be a seen as a good time for something a bit 'different' - a choir item (if you have a choir), or some reflective organ music, or silence.

To be honest, though, we almost always have a hymn at this point.

Re: Liturgical Tourism

Thanks again, oops - very kind. I know, there is a bit of a problem with the congregation's lack of singing. I really don't know why they love that Our Father so much - we do a pretty good mixture of styles with lots like that our Father (not all traditional all the time!) but they always seem reluc...

Re: Liturgical Tourism

Yes, I did notice! I'm hoping it's not too big a 'however'.

It really is lovely to have some positive feedback, but I know we're far from perfect - the 'however' could probably well be any number of things!

Re: Liturgical Tourism

A long haul up the Aire Valley in brilliant sunshine past the Aldis and the Asdas, the car lots and the curry houses, the solid building that was once the Sooty Museum........ ... Missa de Angelis plus an Alleluia. Three hymns - At the Name of Jesus, When I survey, Glory be to Jesus. I think. Not s...

Such a shame the Gloria and Sanctus are not sung in our region.

Oops, do pop over to St. Anne's, Keighley for our 11am Mass one week if you can. We always sing the Gloria and Sanctus!

Re: Liturgical Tourism

Sorry, I know I'm in the minority (and off-topic) but I have to give a shout out in favour of the Missal Gloria.

It works in our parish.

Re: Where can I buy the St Anne's Mass?

This link says it is the 2011 version: m I think I bought mine from B&H but I've got a feeling that I double checked with them first. Decent Mass setting. We only used the Gloria a few times before letting it go by the way side but the rest is solid. Congregation love the Sanctus and the Agnus i...
