...any worse?

As a junior schools supply teacher, I was called in at short notice on 1st July to a Catholic primary, and told to teach from my own material. For RE I referred to SS P&P, and the Mass the I assumed the children would have been involved in that week. They did not know what I was talking about. Th...

Thank you for the explanation, Presbyter, but in that case, why were they beatitudes before?

Changing words

Not a psalm I know, but if I was setting the beatitudes I would choose to use 'blessed' rather than 'happy.' I wish I could understand how the happitudes came about, and I wince at every funeral where this passage is used.

Bitter valley

I find it hard to understand how anyone can copyright scripture. OK, there's graphic copyright, and the translater is worthy of his fee, but beyond that how can it be justified? I thought I'd go back to Douay to see if paraphrasing that might work: In there the 'Bitter Valley' is 'the vale of tears....

This Sunday

I had planned Sing of the Lord's goodness, and In the Lord I'll be ever thankful, both of which I will change. We also have Gather us in,(the lost and forsaken), and Eternal Father strong to save, which aren't too out of place.

We joined you in our prayers on Sunday, and began Mass with Siya hamba, - We are marching in the light of God. I had a complaint the previous week about my choice of Faith of our fathers. They seem to me to express similar sentiments.

Peace to His people..

This article against responsorial Glorias is by a classical pianist and chamber musician who condemns 'folk style' music out of hand when folk music is as diverse in style as church music. He does not actually demonstrate any knowledge of the music of the people, but he knows he hates it. Yes, the s...

isihac ???

I went to the link and 'Full in the panting heart of Rome' was mentioned. This time last year it seemed totally old fashioned, but after this April, I'm not so sure. It was I know, used in a couple of parishes locally while Rome was, if not panting, certainly heaving.

No response?!

Hang about a bit, didn't the two Glorias I know of from the Papal visit in 82, Coventry and Cardiff, have responses. JPii didn't complain...

Singing the Mass

The Holy, holy, and Lamb of God from the Gordon Rock Mass are simple and usable, and, I would think, ideal to get your congregation used to singing the straight words, instead of versified ones as in the American and Israeli ones. We have never used the Creed or Our Father from this Mass. I think th...

How much do we have to understand word for word?

The people who grew up with the Latin hymns to honour the Blessed Sacrament know that they are singing reverent, prayerful language that they have learnt from childhood, just as they learnt their mother tongue: buy ear. They don't have to analise it word for word for it to be valid. And how many of ...

I agree with mcb that ad libbing does not enhance the celebration. Explanation of / commentary on / what is happening doesn't fit in as part of the actual EP. It should be done some other way. If this module is aimed at deacons on the way to priesthood: Remember that the action of the liturgy is mor...

Why ...Latin?

Why do we sing in Latin? Probably for the same reason as an Italian pilot flying a German plane over France will be communicating with control towers in English. Where now English is a very common second language worldwide, so that if a Romanian meets a Thai they are more likely to have Engish in co...

de Angelis etc.

I agree with you all! What it comes down to is that even the Vatican sometimes has to work with the art of the possible, and use a bit of what is well known, albeit embroidered with polyphony in between, and an organ is quite useful when your congregation is 350,000. Yes there are better plainsong M...
