Re: Status of Hymns at Mass
Who would have the sheer arrogance to compose a more liturgically correct version of the psalm that is Old 100th? Alan BUt what status would you give this little poetic offering? 1 I joyed when to the house of God, Go up, they said to me. 2 Jerusalem, within thy gates our feet shall standing be. 3 ...

Re: Status of Hymns at Mass
If that was the intention of the English bishops, they missed out one step.
They forgot to commission and pay for settings of the Propers in English.
Any volunteers?

There is no special magic in this or that way of expressing the same idea or truth, unless it is a creal statement that needs assent.
All I expect is that the powers that be do me and my fellow worshippers the courtesy of not mangling our language. I find it deeply patronising and offensive.

Re: Ministers (lay and ordained) charging for their ministries
Gosh, sounds as though Southern Comfort has had dreadful experiences of diaconal ministry! My experience is limited to two, one at Summer School and another in my son's parish, but based on that I'd be all in favour of deacons. I can see how S.C.'s example might arise though, so do many people shar...

Re: Choir wanted: Guild of St Stephen, Southwark, Annual Rally
I think that a stipend can have a two way benefit for the musician "a labourer is worthy of their hire." etc for the parish a contract can be a way of "persuading" people that perhaps their playing is more of a hindrance than a help. Just because financial reward is involved that...

Re: Two queries for my small choir
Here's a vote for Bach chorales. Something like the Passion Chorale is exquisite in Holy Week and very singable(and listenable to), but challenging enough to give a beginning choir areal sense of achievement. The English Hymnal is brimming with them for every season.

If only education were just a matter of telling a child that something is to be believed, and they then believed it. I think that Catholicism is rather more than a set of propositions that have to be assented to. And I believe that catholic schools are about so much more than that. They at least hav...

Re: Active Participation?
I totally agree about Humanae Vitae. To compound matters it is the children of that 60s generation who are now unchurched. When I talk to the pupils about the church in the Catholic Secondary where I work it is seen as a complete irrelevance to 95% of their lives. They have no contact with the Churc...

I have seen them lay a hand on the head and say "God bless you," as a parent might to a child.

Re: Active Participation?
Thank you, Oops, for reminding me that I should have read it. I'm afraid that two things struck me about the article. 1) It tends to make statements though they were revealed truth. It doesn't seem to have any doubts. In particular, it claims that the liturgical renewal post V2 was a success. In vi...

I assumed we were talking about playing in our own communities, where I would hope we would be aware of what they know.
