Re: New Pope

"I'm curious, what's more, as to the source of Fr Gunter's view that the washing of feet in the liturgical context is an imitation of the Last Supper and "intrinsically attached" to the institution of the priesthood. For my money it's neither of these things." writes mcb. I agree...

Re: Bishops

JW: I'm a bit surprised that Hinsley Hall isn't considered suitable for a retreat - after all the numbers of bishops etc would mean that they would have sole occupancy. My point is that Hinsley Hall is also the Curial Offices of Leeds Diocese and too close to home for some and there a few staff ther...

Re: Bishops

Perhaps JW has not paid a bill at Hinsley Hall. I don't think it is cheap. In any case I'm not sure that the bishops are attending a conference per se. My impression is that this is something of a departure as it will be a retreat, in which case some places which are a hub of diocesan or monastic ac...

Re: Bishops

Good excuse for not being able to attend Wednesday's funeral, eh?
I hope they have a productive time together.

Re: Another Easter Vigil question - Litany of The Saints

As far as I can recall it is used when you have a baptism and/or when blessing the font in which case it includes the appropriate additions.

Re: Organ nightmares

Back on topic, In the early 1980s I was accompanying the University Choir doing Evensong at York Minster at the end of which the choir leaves the worship space and sings the final sentence from a side aisle having received a subtle note from the organ. Unfortunately I had not spotted that the Tuba M...

Re: Organ nightmares

yes, musicus, I am sure you are correct. I watched it myself and the sign of peace accompanied by the Agnus Dei jarred with me. I wondered if others have found it tricky to avoid a hiatus as clergy have the sacrament distributed to them prior to the 'behold the Lamb of God'. The use of additional ve...

Re: Readings for the Easter Vigil

I agree with my fellow Sheffielder Anne - all seven readings is an opportunity rather than a challenge. The only decision would then be over the choice of the 7th psalm dependent on whether you are celebrating baptisms that night. When I was Music Director at St Ignatius Stamford Hill in the late 19...

Re: New Pope

You might have expected JPII to have canonised more than Benedict XVI partly due to the length of years he was in office but also as a response to Vatican II's encouragement of inculturation. In this context many parts of the world were enabled to have saints who were born in their nation rather tha...

Re: New Pope

The difficulty with suggesting 'Who is she that stands triumphant' is that, if used for the Sunday, it might be considered inappropriate for much the same reason as we cannot celebrate st Patrick on his appointed Feast day this year ... the 5th Sunday of Lent takes precedence. The first three Masses...

Re: Closure of Department for Pastoral Formation - Portsmout

I do wonder whether some of elements of this discussion might better have taken place in private via the PM facility. A more appropriate focus for our sensitivities is those diocesan staff and parish communities who will be most directly affected by the closure of the Pastoral Formation department i...

It is not just Paul Inwood affected by this. The highly regarded Nicky Stevens is among other staff involved.

Re: Making time for prayer before Mass

Surely there is plenty of time for private prayer during the rest of the week. Liturgy is about communal prayer and the musician's role in enabling the community's song is critical in this. I, for one, always introduce new material immediately before Mass and have done so since I were a lad! I was c...
