Re: 50 (or more) years on - Sacrosanctum Concilium

Notice the word " sometimes " in your quote from Sacrosanctum Consilium. This word may well be used in the sense of " rarely ". The new translation was imposed in exactly the same way as the other changes since 1962. The return of the tridentine mass is the first morsel of choice...

Re: 50 (or more) years on - Sacrosanctum Concilium

Very few people have ever told me that they left because mass was in English.

Re: 50 (or more) years on - Sacrosanctum Concilium

You have hit on a serious problem here. It is a principle of experimentation that you only change one thing at a time, but the introduction of the New Mass was not considered to be an experiment. The church was conceited enough to think the the new mass was right first time. Well, pride was consider...

Re: 50 (or more) years on - Sacrosanctum Concilium

Dialogue Mass was well established in the Black Country in the fifties. My parish was St Francis Xavier, Oldbury, but we also went to relations' parishes, St Hubert, Oldbury, the English Martyrs, Whiteheath, St Gregory, Bearwood, the Immaculate Conception, Edgbaston, and of course, St Chad's. I have...

Re: Theology

Humph! You have a rather gloomy view of God. I was always taught that God is everywhere, not out there. That includes within us. We have free will, so we can ignore Him, or even do the opposite of His will, but He will not abandon us. The idea of us being the Body of Christ is us joining together wi...

Re: Sunday Celebrations in the absence of a priest

...If a priest walked by a bakery and (even inadvertently) muttered "This is my Body", was all the bread in the shop now consecrated? What does de defectibus say about this? Surely there would be a defective intent to say a valid mass? ...On A Sunday, I am sick in bed one hundred yards fr...

Re: Year of Faith

Nick, I think this is well off topic, but would you please explain what you mean by left and right wing in a catholic context? Perhaps you could start a new thread.

Re: Year of Faith

If we only have one intelligent and serious periodical then we are in trouble because that weekly could press its own viewpoint without any balancing contrary opinion. Remember that intelligence and benevolence, and indeed faith, are not as tightly linked as we might like them to be. There are plent...

Re: Malurgy

I have thought of kneeling, but where our pp stands he has his toes right on the edge of the sanctuary step. It would be interesting to see how high he jumped, but it may not contribute to the sense of awe of receiving communion...

Re: Malurgy

Mea culpa, I always thought that the new testament followed on from the old, and that its books were considered canonical. I stand corrected.

Re: Malurgy

If you look at 2 Chronicles chapter 4 you will see that the temple is split into two parts: verse 22 specifically mentions the doors of the inner temple, the Holy of Holies. Now, if it had doors, it is reasonable to suppose that they were in some sort of wall or barrier. Even if they stood hanging o...

Re: High esteem for the pipe organ?

I agree with the various suggestions for how to make a silk purse out of this particular sow's ear, but it always makes me think of a fairground organ. Perhaps the answer is to mount a little marionette on the front of the organ to conduct the congregational singing? Marenghi The drums might come in...
