Re: plainchant mass, etc.
I love this concept of the 5 minute 'warm-up' before mass starts. I guarantee you that some two thirds of the congregation arrive at 10.59 for 11.00am mass in our parish! Still, at least one third of the congregation will be up to speed. Then we have to find the cantors who can do the job and are wi...

Re: Organ accompaniments
Broadly, I agree with Nick. Some pieces just do not 'work' when played on the organ because they are clearly suited to a percussive rather than sustained style - for example some of Bernadette Farrell's works and some of the music of David Haas and the like. In the end I persuaded our parish priest ...

Re: negotiations and hymns choices.....
Its interesting that we are still, fundamentally, dealing with the mentality of 'low mass with hymns'. 'Sing the Mass' was published in 1975 and here we are, 34 years later, dealing with congregations that have not, in the main, had the catechesis/formation to move on from there. That is no real sur...

It was published in 'Hymns for Catholic schools' (pale blue cover) published by Burns & Oates and 'Authorised by the Catholic Teachers' Federation of England & Wales'! I have the accompaniment volume, but there is no publication date, and the refrain is 'Then I will love thee..' in each vers...

Re: Software at your service
Thanks mcb. I've had a quick look at Barfly (should be the name of an inebriated rock group!) and Lilyput. I see what mcb means about the problems with them, but I might give Barfly a longer try. I will also check whether Finale produces neumes, or simply 'leaves the tails off' (as seems to be the c...

Does that last comment mean that I have had the pleasure (?) of seeing a moderator moderate a moderator?

Re: Software at your service
I have used Finale Printmusic 2001 for years (albeit in a very limited way). I decided that it really was time for a change and tried out Mozart, Sibelius and Finale. I could not get on with Mozart, had a few problems with Sibelius (which also seemed to be very expensive) and thought Finale was the ...

Re: Making recordings
On 28th April GIA announced that 'no charge' diocesan and parish printing of Grail IV psalms in service booklets will be permitted. The recording policy is still under consideration.

Re: Making recordings
That's exactly what I meant Nick. The guide that Presbyter has referred us to is an excellent summary of the position and if people follow it they should be ok. I checked the position with Calamus before I wrote my last comment. Calamus may not have the ability to give performing rights consent on b...

Re: Making recordings
For what it is worth I looked into the position as I indicated above. Normal CCLI licenses will also cover recording of music in the limited circumstances under consideration, but only for publishers who have signed up to the CCLI licensing scheme . The Calamus licence does not carry any recording r...

Re: Making recordings
The production of a recording without having the appropriate permit of a church service is a criminal offence. Each person who distributes, or assists in the making of such a recording is also committing an offence. The performing Rights Society ('PRS') is becoming ever more vigilant in policing thi...

Re: Archbishop of Westminster
I have been given to understand that Shrewsbury might like to have it back. I hope it was a joke! It was described to me by the person who first suggested that Archbishop Vincent should wear it as "a mitre to die for"! I thought he was kidding me until I saw it yesterday.
