New Master of Papal Ceremonies

- from the Vatican's daily news bulletin: The Holy Father has appointed the Most Reverend Diego Giovanni Ravelli, office head of the Office of Papal Charites and Pontifical Master of Ceremonies, as Master of Pontifical Liturgical Celebrations and head of the Pontifical Sistine Chapel Choir. Msgr. Di...

Re: Mission Opportunity

Just in case anyone may have got the wrong end of the stick, I have just come back from France and visited around 7 churches - some for public Mass. None them asked about my vaccination status. I would expect there to be an outcry if anyone suggested proof of vaccination should be required to enter ...

Re: "Responsorial" Gloria

For what it is worth, we're delaying the introduction of the Gloria for a few weeks while we get the congregation used to singing responses etc again. I can think of 2 responsorial Glorias - one from the Lourdes Mass (Lècot), but make sure you use the 2011 translation version (there are still a few ...

Communal Singing in Church

From Sajid Javid's statement to the Commons today: "There will no limits on the number of people who can attend life events such as weddings and funerals, and there will be no restrictions on communal worship or singing."

Re: Wedding at Westminster

I think that the Church could have given a prompter explanation of the rules in general terms, which might have removed some confusion and reduced reputational damage. Boris Johnson was baptised a Catholic. Neither of his first two 'marriages' took place in a Catholic Church or elsewhere with the re...

New Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship

The Vatican has confirmed today that Archbishop Arthur Roche has been appointed as the new Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. Probably not a great surprise as he was its Secretary until today. Presumably now in line for a Red Hat.

Updated guidelines for Religious Worship

The Guidelines for Places of Worship have been updated today - see: COVID-19: guidance for the safe use of places of worship and special religious services and gatherings during the pandemic. Changes 'from' 28th March (which would normally on 29th March onwards). 'Small groups' are then allowed, but...

Re: Women in 'Minor Orders'

I'm a little bothered if readers are being selected by someone other than, in a parish, the parish priest! As I said in my original posting, its really now over to the bishops to take this further and make it work in a reasonable and coherent manner, with the necessary formation being provided. The ...

Women in 'Minor Orders'

Pope Francis has just issued a motu proprio that women can be installed in the liturgical ministries of lector and acolyte. Ok, women have been proclaiming readings at Mass, and girls have been serving on the altar (both with Vatican permission) – for 30 years or so, but up until now, only males cou...
