Re: Liturgical Tourism

In another part of God's own County I can vouch for the popularity of the Weiner 'Our Father'. It is sung about twice a month at different Masses and is always rousing. The congregation are on their own for at least six out of eight weekend Masses each month and usually make a very good sound with b...

A visit to this site and its comments might prove enlightening: www.catholiccollarandtie. Damian Thompson has
an interesting article on the same subject in this weeks Catholic Herald.

REQUIEM IN LIVERPOOL

Was anyone else as disgusted as I was by the car crash of Liturgical and Musical abuse on display at the funeral of a pop-star in a Liverpool Catholic Church yesterday? The BBC web-site gave full details. Is that Bishop a Catholic? Does he believe in the Real Presence of Our Lord in the Blessed Sacr...

Re: Post of Director of Organ School and Organ, Diocese of L

The Diocesan Music service operates in other LEAs , Bradford, Kirklees, Wakefield, North Yorkshire.
Their funding arrangements for music and the arts are presumably different from those of Leeds.

Re: Post of Director of Organ School and Organ, Diocese of L

The Diocese of Leeds was reported to be £1.3 million in the red only a few weeks ago. The Cathedral Music Fund target for this year is £12,250 of which only £2,235 has been raised so far. The organ fund target is £700,000 of which £129,859 has so far been raised. Where is this new salary of £21,000+...

Re: Counselling needed.

You have all my sympathies. Would it not be a good idea to forward this post to your Bishop, the chief liturgist of the Diocese? He should be made aware of this lamentable situation and be prepared to do something about it. Has not the Leeds Diocese got a highly regarded Music Department? is it not ...

Music and Liturgy.

I was very surprised to see in the February 2015 issue of ' Music and Liturgy' that the disgraced former
s
Bishop of Arundel and Brighton was still listed as one of the Principal Patrons of the Society.

The continued use of "old translation" mass settings

Surely better to sing nothing then. But why does Alan29 think that in most parishes the musicians are incapable of learning in three years simple Mass settings? Is it stupidity or stubborn refusal to try anything unfamiliar? The revised Celtic 'Holy, holy' is as easy as the old one but an effort has ...

The continued use of "old translation" mass settings

Moderator's insertion for clarity's sake: In another thread, JW said [quote]The choir was great, it was a Gospel choir, consisting of about 20 people, providing good leadership for the congregation, as well as 3 choir items. Despite this there were some unexpected music choices: Entrance: All you n...

Re: Year of Faith - Did it help increase numbers in your par

I agree will Alan29. It is probably almost impossible to judge by one parish. My own diocese (Leeds) has a fall in Mass attendance from 31,733 in 2012 to 31,014 in 2013 700+. Not much evidence there of any positive effect from the Year of Faith. Incidentally our neighbouring Diocese -Middlesbrough- ...

Re: Leeds Cathedral Midnight Mass on BBC1

I managed ato watch it on I-Player. I was quite impressed but disappointed that they did not include the two items which for me define a Catholic Midnight Mass --Come to the Manger and Adeste Fideles ( In the Vincent Novello arrangement if possible.) I think 'Come to the Manger' would have fitted be...

Re: Academy in Scotland & James MacMillan

I too wish the new initiative every success. I notice that there is no mention of the long-established St. Mungo Music organisation. I have found this a useful resource in different ways. I had the impression that it was the official liturgical music organisation of the Glasgow Arcdiocese. Their lea...

Re: Re-opening and dedication of Cathedral Church of St Mari

I have liked St. Marie's very much when I have visited occasionally over many years.
I look forward to seeing the restoration when next in Sheffield. I do hope it has not been
ruined liked St. Anne's in Leeds with walls and fences cluttering the sanctuary.

Re: Guide for Accompanying Mass

Thank you Father. I found this very interesting. You state in your section on the Gloria that it should always involve the whole congregation. However GIRM (p44 para53) says that one option for the Gloria is that it may be sung by the choir alone. Also 'Glorias' sung in the 'responsorial' form are j...
