Re: Reviving our music

In any parish there is the 10% that do, and the 90% that let them, getting that 90% involved is a constant challenge. In mine it's more like 10% that do, 80% that let them get on with it at 10% that moan without lifting a finger to help. As to copyright, does the copyright on the text actually stop...

Re: Hymn book Woozle Traps

There are a couple in HO&N where the key signature is wrong in the melody edition. Also, I'm pretty sure in their suggested hymns for particular Sundays, they've suggested Seek Ye First for one of the Sundays in Lent... Liturgical HON lists it under "Lent" in its "Index of Uses&q...

Re: Hymn book BearTraps

Welcome to the forum, Kingfisher! There are a couple in HO&N where the key signature is wrong in the melody edition. Wouldn't surprise me. There are also numerous instances in Laudate and probably elsewhere as well of the guitar chords being wrong unless you use a capo, which is not explicitly s...

Re: Litany of Saints

I should have ordered the G&S score instead. In this case, it's S without the G. I think the idea of setting a "little list" to this particular Sullivan tune came from Tom Lehrer, with "The Elements" and it's his version of the tune here. Years ago, I also heard a version (I...

Re: A question of image

... The upshot could only be that a few more people who might currently think of the SSG as the plainsong preservation society will realise that it isn't. Yesterday evening I mentioned to SSG to a casual acquaintance, a church organist lamenting the 1970s dross he's required to play, and had the re...

Re: Summer School 2008 - You have put on Christ

But talking of eating into holidays, etc., is there a need for some form of SSG eventing that would be accessible (SP?) to people who are not teachers and who have family commitments? Like weekends I guess. Or days. Why not come to the Composers' Group? oo Peter I bet that is a really bad idea on y...

Re: 'Yahweh' in Catholic liturgy

For now, I must get "Yahweh, I Know You Are Near" out of my head. On the rare occasions when we have used this hymn in my church (about 25 years ago!) my then PP substituted "Father" for the forbidden word. At least it is a form of address we have Biblical authority to use and i...

Re: Incidental Music for Mass

Sunday 31 will also give way to All Saints and Sunday 32 to the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica. In addition, those of us in Portsmouth Diocese also lose Sunday 33 to Edmund of Abingdon, giving us "white" Sundays for the whole of November, except the last one, which is the First Sunday...

Re: The wickedness of face cream

A friend recently drew my attention to some "Summer Special Offers" from a well-known ecclesiastical supplier, including a: "Wick trimmer in Sheffield steal. Guilt finish" Presumably any of their readers stealing anything from Sheffield (or anywhere else for that matter) would en...

Re: Hymn book Woozle Traps

The numbers for "Be thou my vision" and "Lord of all hopefulness" are swapped in the index of the organ edition of L They are consecutive hymns fitting the same tune so the congregation would never notice if the wrong number went up! Er, not quite. 969 has up-beats to the second...

Aren't we going off the topic of the Guild of St Stephen? Recent postings seem more relevant to http://www.ssg.org.uk/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=577.

Re: Cringe-making lines in hymns

... 'Go silent friend, Forgive us if we grieve for you... (Forgive ??) In Laudate the text appears as "... forgive us if we grieved you", which makes perfect sense. What might make some people from the Emerald Isle cringe is the name given to the tune. I prepared a service sheet for the r...

Re: Two queries for my small choir

Yes, welcome Angela! Another Palestrina motet you could try is "Bone Pastor" - very appropriate for the Sunday after next! Many years ago, when I was a student I did it with the chaplaincy choir, most of whom did not read music so we learned everything by note-bashing. I can't remember how...

Re: Pentecost Sequence

We sing the hymn "Holy Spirit Lord of Life" as the Pentecost sequence. So do we (Laudate 301) and it seems to work well. There's a Taizé "Veni Sancte Spiritus" chant with verses in several languages (if you like the idea of "singing in tongues" for Pentecost) paraphras...
