Precisely! Aren't priorities a little odd? Hours will be spent on a secular show but music for a school mass might be thrown together at the last moment if there is any music at all!

Couldn't get to the original but I agree with Sidvicius. We are the church and we have a responsibility to teach the young both in the parish and in our schools. Why not talk to the teachers and find out what they know? Make sensible suggestions about liturgy in schools. Do not be discouraged! And N...

Rehearsing the assembly

Dear Nick Hilarious! In our diocese gold lame jackets are de rigeur for diocesan celebrations! No, no just teasing! In my present setup, I play a suitable voluntary often based on hymn tune we are to use and vicar introduces the liturgy and then has a short period of silence before announcing the fi...

This is a SERIOUS problem. I know of very few people learning the organ in this part of the world. Learn the organ year produced some people and I have held "Have a go on the organ" sessions on the organ. The organists association has cheap rates for students and I learnt so much from orga...

St Patrick

Presbyter you made me laugh I do remember a sung Mass where the PP said he would be lynched if we didn't change the last hymn to "Hail glorious St Patrick". He was so thrown by it all that he forgot to consecrate the wine so it was invalid. I waited to give him the note for the Mystery of ...

I think it a disgrace that the organ at a major pilgrimage centre for the diocese is so inadequate. I played it for a Unity Commission Mass and it basically had one sound and one volume only.

2nd Sunday of Easter

Yes it's a must. We sang "Godhead here in hiding" during communion at the Westminster Chrism Mass and the priests obviously loved it. I wish we sang "O sons and daughters" more - it's a great tune and Anthony Greening did an excellent arrangement for the RSCM. Martin Baker has ar...

I'm impressed! And can the choir now see the altar during the consecration?

I always think of Sister Madeleine's wise words "Never despair - there are little lights shining out like liturgical beacons all over the place". How good it would be to get priests and people to attend training days and the like! We have become a committee church. Too much talk and not en...

It's the text that matters! Will it comfort and support? I well remember a funeral where the PP agreed to the playing of a CD of a pop song beloved by the deceased at the end of the liturgy and the family were distraught. I attended a Methodist funeral recently of a 16 year old murdered in a gang fi...

meeting

edbowie we really must meet up! I entirely agree about the wonderful Tenebrae concert and Simon's superb playing. He played the Bach Prelude in E flat after a Thursday 5.30 p.m. Mass - what a joy! Chorister for a day today was once again a delight. 160 applied and 60 took part! And the choristers sa...

Universal language

Surely English is a universal language? Shouldn't we be aiming for a situation where everyone joins in without having to have a book in their hands? So tinkering with the people's parts of the Mass is NOT a good idea. I well remember occasions including summer school where items in Latin were comple...

Grief and Christmas and Turvey

And oh yes I got through all the services OK! Just at the end of Midnight Mass I felt the emotions welling up as I reached the final chords of Bach's Fantasia on "In dulci jubilo" and I said "I did it, Dad!" I can recommend Turvey Abbey as a good place for a quiet retreat. It's g...

All went well on Sunday apart from one thing! Despite all the discussions and checking of the booklet, there was a misunderstanding about who was actually printing the booklets so I had to nip home to get the originals so that copies could be made. In the end 55 copies were needed! I did a display o...
