Re: Funerals and autocrats

I imagine when you are a cathedral organist it can be irritating to have to suffer the rag bag of us who fill in to provide music in our parishes. Not every excellent musician can have the temperament to be encouraging or accepting of less accomplished players. (Mea culpa here, in a way, as I sat in...

Re: Music for Papal Mass in Phoenix Park, Dublin

Meanwhile, in parishes where 'nobody has time for practices,' and it is about the art of the possible, we almost always sing the simple chant Amen.

Re: Clericalism?

This is a fascinating post. We were in a similar situation in 1970s, not with daily Mass, but Sundays, with one priest and three Masses, there was one reader for each Mass, for years. And we had many years of the Triduum without music. I was a young mother with little confidence to 'interfere' then....

Re: Guitars

Ouch!!! Clearly there are guitars and guitars, and players of same. Our other guitar Mass leader also introduces songs with strummed chords, on a 12 string, sometimes 8 bars, and we are still none the wiser as to what is going to be sung, and this is not helped by the fact that the OHP operators oft...

Re: Hymns for Confirmation?

How do the words 'She sits like a bird' personifying the Spirit as female, tie in with the creed, '...Conceived of the Holy Spirit,' ?

Re: Hymns for Confirmation?

And there is always 'Walk in the Light', or 'All over the world, the Spirit is moving'. 70s and 80s I know, but sort of modern.

Re: Hymns for Confirmation?

We have used 'Come down, O love divine,' 'Breathe on me Breath of God', Taize 'Veni Sancte Spiritus' , -very simple ostenato, and beautiful verses; also Chris Walker's Veni Sancte Spiritus composed for JPII's Confirmation Mass in Coventry in 1982. That is a more challenging piece, with the counterpo...

Re: Mary, Mother of the Church

It is new this year, and I only found it while trying to ascertain the restoring of the proper Ascension Holy Day. BTW, the CBEW website is appalling to search for anything on.

Re: I Sing Pop, 'Christian music project'

Well, I was prepared to hate this, and the 'beat' backing track was on while we waited, low and not loud. All 217 primary school children were around the altar and choir area, and the church set up as I imagine it has to be for a broadcast, with all cables stuck down, and sound desk and screens all ...

I Sing Pop, 'Christian music project'

Has anyone come across I Sing Pop? It is endorsed by various Anglican dioceses, and has a C of E bishop as trustee. The team, as far as I can see, goes into a school for a week, to teach the children songs with Christian message. Then they make a record, and have a big concert in the parish church, ...

Re: Congratulations, Bernadette!

Congratulations indeed. Bernadette has given us so many gems, and we sang the Vigil version of Christ be our Light: This is the night of new beginnings, last week.
