Re: Realising Bishop Alan's hope

But on this issue there are few (if any) copyright problems. See the note by musicus in the Feast of the Transfiguration thread (relating to a call for settings of Psalm 96). Now this is a little different, given that the text copyrights are held by The Grail/Collins (and, I believe, for the latest...

Re: Realising Bishop Alan's hope

I recently completed a new setting for the 17th Sunday of the year. Readers might be interested in how I structured the texts supplied in the Missal (I use both of them): Introduction: 2 bars to set up the basic tonality (F major) Musical material A1(2 bars) Cantor: sings the opening phrase of the f...

Re: Suggestions for a Choral Mass Setting

Sorry. I meant to send a personal message and I found I could not fully cross it off having accidentally put it out on the public forum.

Re: Suggestions for a Choral Mass Setting

Could you be a bit more specific about the sort of thing you want? From your reference to Byrd am I right in thinking you want an a capella setting with no instrumental backing etc? Are you necessarily wedded just to an SATB lineup? Are you looking at just Latin settings, or English ones? If the lat...

Re: Realising Bishop Alan's hope

Many thanks for the responses to my contributions on this thread. Many ask why I stick with the Missalettes. Apart from the answers given by myself and contrabourdon there are two personal ones: [1] As a composer I 'like' the challenge of setting 'difficult' texts; although I also moan about them. [...

Re: Realising Bishop Alan's hope

Bin the missalettes. They are of no use. Give the assembly a simple printed sheet with hymn texts psalm response etc all in one place. And they really do get used to reading the dots after a while Would that I could. Unfortunately I (like many church musicians) have no control over such policies. I...

Re: Realising Bishop Alan's hope

My question is, why would anyone want to keep to the ICEL texts anyway? They are not even an option for the Entrance and Communion antiphons, except in the USA. That gives composers the opportunity to think outside the box and come up with something that is rather more appropriate to the liturgical...

Re: Realising Bishop Alan's hope

Yes, this is an attractive idea. What about text copyrights though? I know this is maddening, but my understanding (no doubt flawed) is that publication on the internet without permission from text (including translation) copyright holders could render the website host as well as the composer liable...

Re: Happy Birthday Wagner!

Perhaps we should also recall that Wagner became a rabid anti-semite. It has been argued (by Howard Goodall no less) that Parsifal (as well as The Meistersingers) is a vehicle for such ideas and that it was exploited by the Nazi party for this reason. Does this mean we should necessarily use any of ...

Re: Year of Faith prayer

Here are some suggestions: [1] Shorter phrases. [2] Simpler vocabulary [3] You might consider something more 'gender neutral' than 'men'. [4] Construct them with an eye to be set to music. Ideas - not necessarily in this order - and probably you should not use all of them in a single prayer, perhaps...

Re: ' ... educating children in good liturgy?'

Here are some ad hoc reactions: I find it remarkable that everyone here is talking about introducing children to church music - as opposed to textual/gestural concerns pertaining to liturgy. Nothing wrong with that in itself of course. If one sticks to church music I think there are three related pr...

Re: Organ nightmares

Yes, the anacrusis version certainly had something to do with it but, Mission Praise being what it is, there were other issues with the text and the way the music was adjusted to fit it. My main point was really to do with the dangers arising from using other hymnals than the one used by the congreg...

Re: Out with the Inwood, and in with the oldwood

I glanced at the remarks made by Bishop Egan that triggered this exchange; and liked much of what I saw. However, the feature that arrested my attention was the idea that if we have a multicultural society with many people for whom English is only a second language then priests should be enjoined to...

Re: Organ nightmares

Here is an experience I encountered only yesterday - I would not be surprised if others have had it; but it does contain a useful lesson. We picked 'Be Thou My Vision' as the opening hymn. As this was Anglican All Age Worship with Baptism we used Mission Praise as our hymnal. However as its setting ...

Re: Catholic influence on the wider Church

So sorry that my reply to a question has diverted attention from the original topic: How much influence does Catholic church music in England have on the music of other Christian denominations? Is it expanding or contracting? In my original contribution I used the term 'Folk' music/groups as a short...
