O come Emmanuel
...the Jewish people. Nah, I tend to take it as a more generic "people of God", or anyone in a fix who turns to the one true God for help. Should we sing it? I don't have a problem with the words, and I like the verse melody. It's the dismal "Rejoice" which gets me - always soun...

EP 1
Maybe it's something to do with old haunts, but having returned to my 'growing up' church in Birmingham I heard EP1. When I was a kid they would cycle through them week by week, and it seems that while other things have changed, notably a rather elegant gong in place of the more usual altar bells, c...

To do that you'll probably need to activate your 'extended roman' keyboard Nick; it's a little more fiddly than a standard ALT+number code. Go here and click on 'by language>A-D' to work it out. The notes suggest that it works fine with PC or Mac operating systems - I think you said you were a Mac u...

Can anybody suggest a reason why this apparently innocuous thread has received over 22000 views? Light years ahead of any other thread on the forum!

latin missal translation
Good point reginald, although I think at this time the church may want to lead us to the water but I'm not convinced that the congregation will want to drink - it would have to be a persuasive argument. As Nick says, no really good reason has been offered, other than perhaps some comments viz inclus...

revival
Always bothers me when I see unanswered first posts, so here's a resuscitative response If we are serious about the restoration of Latin and chant to the sacred liturgy in normative parishes... Are we though? Latin chant has been recently revived via Taizé, but I don't think this was any deliberate...

You have reminded me of an interesting effect I noticed during a recent CofE sojourn. The organist would invariably 'embellish' the penultimate verse to such extent that the melody of the hymn was utterly lost - not too much of a problem if you know the tune (but very distracting), but very much a p...

cofe hymns
I guess the response to smartalec comments about CofE hymns could be to apologise profusely and promise a proper Catholic mass next week - with no hymns at all and an extended homily. How long would it be before they came creeping humbly back to request a return to the old format.... Dot, while I ma...

I expect you've already found it, but try http://www.bjupress.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&productId=1970955 if you haven't - it seems to be the correct piece. They also seem to be chucking in lyric sheets for free if you need them.

docmattc's question
Sounds like a workable solution, and kills two birds with one stone (if you'll pardon the funereal expression). However, attendees should be made aware of where their participation is through listening, and 'taking in' the hymn text, thus everyone should have a copy of the lyrics.

...the worth of such music are in part determined by how effectively it is executed. Yes - the arrangement and delivery of the music should be such that it draws the message of the hymn text to the full attention of the person singing. One difficulty here is that the delivery is very much dependant...

Nothing really new here I think, although the debate does seem to be polarising between the 'organ camp' and the 'guitar camp', with points in between ignored completely, as is typical for media-driven hyperbole. I'm a little more surprised that "make me a channel" was marked, but dunstan ...

asked [if?] we knew of any church where the servers didn't wear anything over 'street clothes' I guess there could be quite a large bill for this, hence the query. Some places seem to have hordes of redundant young people on the altar, but yes, if you're there, I think it is appropriate that you lo...

holy days
Thumbing through New English Hymnal, the CofE seems to be good at marking holy and even less holy (?) days with hymns, or at least tunes (e.g. "St Bartholomew"). Maybe we should learn up a stack of these, especially if (as suggested above) many important event days are to be saddled on the...

Slightly Off Topic
Here, we are constantly bombarded with new music so it came as no surprise to be presented with a new hymn. But then the organist began and I recognised the tune and could sing along - but my surprise was such that I couldn't remember the words of the hymn afterwards. If the music is supposed to hel...
