I don't think a 4-part arrangement would work. The five parts are equally important, whether in leading off on new 'points' or in imitating them. You can't conflate the two alto parts into one because they overlap too often. Even with the organ accompanying (which some scholars think is perfectly OK...

Sung grace

I have been asked to suggest some sung graces, capable of being sung without too much preparation by attendees at a conference. I don't think they will all be accomplished musicians. In the past, I have encountered some useful rounds that have worked well, but I can't recall them now. Any suggestion...

Thank you to all those of you who formed the choir for the 6pm Mass at Westminster Cathedral yesterday - you made a fine sound. Thank you also to Thomas and to Simon for looking after us so well; it was a pleasure and a priviledge to work with such professional musicians.

I agree with Gwyn. It's a choice between Sibelius and Finale . The former does win out in the ease-of-use stakes. There are various 'cut-down' versions of both programs, so do look on their respective websites to compare features and prices - and do your best to get education pricing, as neither is ...

Thank you, everyone who has offered their services. I shall be sending the music out in the course of this week, by e-mail where possible.

I look forward to working with you at Westminster on 11 November.

Re: Soppy sixties service sheets

And what about first communion children singing "host so white, clean and bright..." to Edelweiss? There are so many anecdotes about these days but can anyone help with documentary evidence? Alas, I have no documentary evidence from before the time of my first computer (1986). But I do ha...

Invitation to join the choir for SSG Mass on 11 November

This year's Annual AGM, Lecture and Mass will take place on Saturday 11 November in Westminster. (See the flyer in M&L or the link on our homepage for details.) I have been asked to arrange the music and to form a choir for the occasion. I have had a preliminary meeting with precentor and I am c...

That's true, of course, Merseysider - my own parish is practising its a cappella singing until September. Still, it's not just about the music ;-)

Holidays and holy days

Why take pot-luck when holidaying in strange climes? Use this thread to ask your fellow posters for recommendations. My wife and I are holidaying in Yorkshire this year - no flights needed, thank goodness - basing ourselves near Leeds. Can any forum members tell us of any Sunday Masses where the li...

Re: Latin II

People might also note that, despite this very specific example, we are still in the realm of isolated cases drawn from personal experience. What is required, surely, is objective statistical evidence based on carefully planned standardised questionaires from a large number of centres (50 plus). Mo...
