Re: New Mass text and music
Paul Inwood's setting of Euchristic Prayer 2 is a good example of a psalm-tone like chant with related material framing it (though when I have used it I don't have the Our Father as I believe this is one text that should always be said, though nostalgia often nudges against this me when using Latin ...

Re: New Mass text and music
Is there, as yet, an instruction on repetition of words or phrases for musical reasons? For example, there are plenty of settings of the present Holy which turn "Lord God of power and might" to "Lord God of power, Lord God of might..." Will composers still have this freedom? I t...

Re: Organs I have known
Is the Venerable in Rome a Tamborini? I've played that, though I think there's been work done on it since (not because of my playing I add!). It has a crescxendo pedal, one of the most dangerous devices known to organkind (unless you're playing Reger and don't have an overly inquisitive right foot);...

New Mass text and music
Today's Tablet carries an article (p 32) concerning the proposed new Mass texts and the possible problems these might pose for composers. It seems that plainsong is envisaged as having a much more prominent role in the musical settings used. It would appear that ICEL "aimed to preserve and reco...

Re: Unison Choir Items
If you have a fairly strong choir and organ of full resource, Bax's Epithalamium is a fabulous piece. Though really a wedding hymn with a bit of mental reservation it can be used on All Saints - the text speaks of "receiving this saint with honour due".

Re: Am I being a pedantic bore ? (yes)
Choir and organ have been requested for a weekday Mass which will be celebrated by a visiting bishop who likes music. Needless to say, choir & organist have not been consulted about the choice of music. Needless to say, the music has been chosen by someone who knows nothing about the liturgy. N...

The new GIRM http://www.liturgyoffice.org.uk/Resources/GIRM/Documents/GIRM.pdf (April 2005 edition for England & Wales) approves the practice of singing during the preparation of the gifts: no. 74 says that singing may always accompany this rite, even when there is no procession, following the ...

Re: Words we don't quite get
How about "O give me Samuel's ear" followed in the next verse by give me Samuel's heart? Yes, our choir sang Sullivan's setting of that a few months ago when it fitted in with the reading. I remember remarking during reheasal that by the time we got the the end there wasn't much of Samuel...

Re: Bet you never had this!
This seems to be saying very clearly: (1) If exposition is taking place in a side chapel, you can't have Mass in the body of the Church at the same time. (2) If exposition is taking place in the body of the Church, it must cease while Mass is being celebrated there. (3) If exposition is taking plac...

Re: Bet you never had this!
In my church, we have 24/7 exposition of the Blessed Sacrament (in the side chapel). When I practice the organ, I generally use an 8 ft stopped flute with the box closed. (To be fair, some adorers like the music and have said so). Does this mean that the Blessed Sacrament is exposed while Mass is b...

Re: Summer Break
Another advantage of the summer break, if you do take one, is that you can attend Mass at another parish where maybe the music carries through ... this might trigger a few ideas for your home parish. And organists particularly might go once in a while to a CofE or Non-conformist church (as long as i...

Re: Organ Voluntaries
We have a final hymn and I will play a final voluntary. I see this as music to go out to - the organ is playing whilst people assemble; it completes the circle for the organ to be playing as people leave. . I would say that the organist is playing whilst people assemble . (There is a story of Georg...

As this thread progresses it will be interesting to see how many (if any) organs contributers " share".
