Be still for the presence of the Lord
You may be interesred to hear that a new organ piece by Jonathan Rees-Williams, "Fantasy on Be still for the presence of the Lord" has just been published by Organist Publications. My copy arrived today. As this is a very popular hymn, a piece based on it is certainly welcome. It is about ...

John Glynn
The Tablet reports that the sun has finally set on John Glynn's priestly ministry; he has resigned in order to marry. I was interested to learn that much of his work was with the travelling community. The Tablet also describes him as "an accomplished musician", citing his best-known compos...

Re: Dr Allan Wicks
Actually Hare there may be a tentative connnection. Mithra in Zoroastrianism may, but just may, have been the inspiration for the Roman mystery cult of Mithras but this argument initialy advanced by Cumont has been challenged in the last 40 or so years. What is more likely in my view is that this wa...

Done; by the way it's the Roman (Mithras), not the Indian (Mitra) or Iranian (Mithra)!

Re: Pentecost Sequence
But the Easter Vigil satisfies the Easter Sunday obligation (with different texts for both); similarly the Christmas Vigil and Midnight Mass satisfies Christmas Day both dawn ad day Mass (with three different sets of text).

Gloria and peace in the new text
Will the Gloria be restored to its historical position as a post-communion hymn (or is that my Anglican background getting the better of me?) and will the Sign of Peace now be before the Offertory?

Re: When nine-fold became six-fold . . .
We still use the Bevenot settings in Re Fa and Sol at St Peter's. They were written pre Vat 2 but make perfect sense in the Novus Ordo. I actually wrote a ninefold Kyrie a few years ago for a celebration of the Extraordinary Rite but have no problems using it in the new rite. When I use de Angelis o...

Re: Why Bother?
I get this feeling every three months - the clergy in my parish are good chaps but not liturgically sensitive. Last Sunday (Easter) we had a double baptism and the photographer wandered around the sanctuary clicking and flashing away (you get my meaning I hope) like a papparazi and then - you won't ...

Re: Easter Greetings
And a happy, holy and liturgically rewarding Easter to you too Mithras. I hope tonight's non-liturgical events on BBC1 don't signal the end of your avatar! He looks too young be the Doctor - he's meant to be 900 years old! But at least the Weeping Angels are making a comeback. In the meantime, if I...

Re: Gospel reader
Pastoral and practical circumstances must determine this. We had an international Mass a couple of years ago when the readings, psalm and gospel and other prayers were proclaimed in a variety of languages. I read the Gospel in Spanish (I was at seminary there for a while), thus mixing ministries (ie...

Re: The disaster that is Christmas
The reason, I think, why Christmas is a disaster for Christianity is that for many - far too many - people, that is all they know of Christianity and let's face, the ingredients are not far removed frrom those of a Walt Disney film. It's sweet, folks, especially with the Franciscan additions, "...

The disaster that is Christmas
I have held the view for some time now that the biggest liability with which Christianity has to contend is Christmas. I'll say no more at this point, wishing to invite comment, but those who know me will prabably know what I mean. Liturgy is not excluded from the discussion.
