Re: Extraordinary Form

Thanks for that Becky.
There is no way I can get my head round that. Why one language should permit inclusion and the other be all discriminatory. Surely it is the same meaning in each activity.

Re: Choral Director Post

I think the funding is already there - from the local education authority, lottery and such like, and the other monies that a diocese may or may not have. And I don't think it is an extension of provision just a continuation ie someone has left. But that is irrelevant. MCB is right this is not the p...

Re: Choral Director Post

Whichever way you look at it, that is 9 paid staff in the Music Department. That'll be quite a big salary bill all told. Luckily it flows into the schools and washes into the parishes. (Washing away organists in the process  )
It'll maybe suit someone who enjoys the Latin.

Re: Only 20 hymns

What he said. And also just mentioning that this thread is an off spin from the thread about parish music in an age of dwindling resources..... in that their is a need for a simple book/CD or website where the average parish can get some help for drawing together people to sing together without a sp...

Re: Only 20 hymns

It is, of course, a variation of the thread on Core Repertoire. But is is also, a look at what people are singing now as Core Repertoire and what they think they ought to be singing or would like to be singing. I guess. However, I started the thread after wittering on about how useful it would be to...

Re: Liturgical Tourism

You are so right - it was on a sheet with some prayers.
(liturgically it was an extension of the forbidden Hail Mary - oh dear, it could hardly get any worse could it?)
I am not sure there were any flowers involved.

That is twice I have heard it sung this year.

Re: Liturgical Tourism

It's in Laudate. It must be PC. After all, the S and M references in Hail Queen of heaven has been changed. No more scourges there! Perhaps the words are changed but I sang it from memory. This sometimes happens. And maybe it is now all about Fair Trade. There was anther SSG member in the next bench...

Re: Liturgical Tourism

Ah that sounds wonderful.

Today I sang The Lourdes Hymn, Shine Jesus SHine, Bring Flowers of the Rarest, One Bread One Body, Sweet Heart of Jesus, and Faith of Our Fathers.
I kid you not. And the Salazaar Gloria.

Speechless.

Well they are not allowed another 20 hymns.

The school has to have the same 20 hymns.

Re: Only 20 hymns

The hymns were -
I'll sing a hymn to Mary (updated version in Laudate)
Hail Queen of Heaven ( thrown on life surge ? )
that version of the Magnificat (Will you go lassy, go)
Sing of Mary Pure and Lowly.

And I was a bit surprised. Someone somewhere was choosing their favourite hymns.

Re: Only 20 hymns

Last Sunday the Mass I attended, they sang four hymns to Mary - a Mary fest - including Hail Queen of Heaven during the Offertory and many people did not join in. I was a bit astonished. They did sing the Acclamations though, with gusto. When I was around 8 years old our teacher, a church musician o...

Re: Only 20 hymns

Yikes. There are 7 there that I don't know and a further 2 I have never sung in church although I know them from somewhere. The rules of the game are that if the repertoire is limited then the congregation will know them and will internalize them so therefore when the music leadership is absent ther...
