Re: I enjoyed that!

People usually enjoy something in which they are fully participating. So that for example, if they are not confident to try a new hymn, they feel they did not enjoy it. And those group occasions with a function in addition to the basic mass, they promote enjoyment because people came to support what...

Re: Magnum Principium

Apart from running and problems with stable doors - what will be the consequences of this?
For instance, in music, will there be opportunities to use the best Glorias of the post Vatican 2 period? Use then in the near future I mean.
Oh, that's an odd idea.

Re: First communion music

There is a whole little corner of awkwardness here ..... to the background of course, of some very well executed and thoughfully chosen music of both kinds. I was thinking about the role of Extraordinary Ministers and the FHC celebrations. And that fact that while the children will receive from the ...

Re: First communion music

I thought Eucharistic Ministers could bless? Otherwise it gets awkward. Leeds is changing the structure of Preparation for FHC and Confirmation. To facilitate the parents to prepare the children. I think something like this was done in around 1989 - I do remember going to a meeting at church and bei...

Re: First communion music

My ex parish used to do the prep and keep a note of who attended as well - at least the families came to Mass for that preparation time. I have accidentally been to two HC Masses the last two weeks. In different churches. The first was OK ish and not hi jacked too badly - just seemed a normal kind o...

Re: I enjoyed that!

Oh that's 'cos you're Catholic.
You feel guilty for enjoying yourself, or that others should so so, if they too, enjoyed themselves.

Re: Prof Eamon Duffy on liturgical music

Sorry I focussed on those terms Particpation and Performance ... I think those that argue against more simple modern contemporary hymns are so longing for pre Vatican 2 Liturgy........... Musicum Sacram has only the term Participation in it. We should really only debate around that document rather t...

Re: Prof Eamon Duffy on liturgical music

.....I'm sure that participatory music can and should be excellent Oops, but examples are very few and far between....... we probably need to ditch these terms of "participatory" and "performance" because it is immediately obvious that "performance" music it not OK, because we are definining it as n...

and that it was better that there should be participatory music than that there should be excellent music......

And does it therefore follow that participatory music cannot also be excellent?

Re: International Hymn Choices

Those are good tunes. People would be compelled to join in or to listen. Lord of the Dance is so awkward - I heard it sung in public in a folk club a lot of years ago by an incompetent group who were booed out of the building and that has always stayed in my memory. In Sydney Carter's Obituary is st...

Re: You can't please all the people all of the time

Yes that is true we don't thank the altar servers etc ect or maybe just on high days and holidays. It tends to be thought that doing that kind of service is a duty and priveledge. Maybe I can't spell priveledge - must find another word, it doesn't look right. Honour. But then again, such persons are...

Re: You can't please all the people all of the time

We have smilies and they are a similar thing. So what is that then? You will carry some clout if you are male/ or have a moustache? Thought so. Also, I always thought there was a bit of "You're not from round 'ere, are you?" going on in my case. So woman might be discriminated against in t...
