Re: Choral Director Post
Er......no it's not. Ashgrove, which is being sold, is right across the road from the academic buildings, halls of residence, etc. It was a visual statement of the presence of the Church around what is a very secular institution. It was high-profile and very convenient. It was frequented by Catholi...

Re: Choral Director Post
Maybe they are funding it through the closure and selling of the Catholic Chaplaincy for the Students of the University of Bradford. Shameful!! It was there that my liturgical sensibilities were first triggered. As far as I'm aware, the Catholic Chaplaincy for Bradford University still exists, it's...

Re: Only 20 hymns
Seriously though, in general, priests seem to have delegated the choice of music to musicians. I've never been sure if this is entirely appropriate. Surely music should be chosen jointly by the celebrant and musicians? My PP leaves it up to me, because he know's I'll choose the thing he would choos...

Re: Only 20 hymns
"Go, the Mass is ended" "Thanks be to God" Loud, crashing organ music while the priest processes to Our Lady's Altar All sing 'Regina Caeli' in Eastertide, or 'Salve Regina' if we get back to Ordinary time whilst still in May and during October. Loud, crashing organ music as the ...

Re: Liturgical Tourism
Today I sang The Lourdes Hymn, Shine Jesus SHine, Bring Flowers of the Rarest, One Bread One Body, Sweet Heart of Jesus, and Faith of Our Fathers.
I kid you not. And the Salazaar Gloria.
Ouch. 6 hymns seems ridiculous.

Re: How accessible is your church?
I think the Catholic church in Cottingley - St. Monica's if I remember - is fairly accessible. It's modern with no steps or narrow aisles etc as far as I'm aware. It might be a bit far for you, though - on the edge of Bingley.

Re: Cardinal Sarah
My understanding of this is that Cardinal Sarah is saying the normal way of celebrating Mass has always been (and continues to be) ad orientem and that Mass versus populum is a permissible option. It isn't necessary to encourage/ ask/ recommend, etc priests to celebrate ad orientem because that's &q...

Re: It's Friday! Singing out of Tune
Have a look at this from about 7:50. The Kyrie is stunning, and not in a good way. The look on the priest's face is priceless.

I just want to point out, for the sake of clarity, that I haven't mentioned style at all in this discussion.

Re: Another type of mass
I understand hymns, worship songs, anything 'religious in it's content' sung at Mass to be religious music. Whereas, I understand the integral parts of the Mass (Kyrie, Gloria, etc etc) including the psalm to be liturgical music. For everyone, not just the original poster, I would say liturgical mus...

Re: Another type of mass
Gosh, this sounds like a nightmare.
Someone once told me, "remember, you'll never keep everyone happy so all you can do is do what's correct".
Also, remember that there's a difference between religious music and liturgical music and preference should be given to the latter.

Re: Percussion
We always repeat the singing of the Alleluia at the end of the Gospel outside of Advent and Lent and it does indeed make more of the Gospel.
I had better leave my thoughts on percussion in the liturgy to myself.

Re: Noises off
This is certainly a problem. I too have noticed a lot of chatter before Mass (including amongst the choir). I seem to have found a small solution in often playing loud, 20th Century voluntaries at the end of Mass. I look around when I'm finished and the church has emptied! During Lent, I may have me...

Re: Saturday evening Masses
I rather agree with Mancunian.
I think that would be the same in my parish. Our Sunday liturgy is fairly splendid, (or so I like to think!) so I reckon those who go to the Vigil Mass go for the simplicity/ quiet/ etc that it offers - a liturgical palette cleanser.

Re: Funeral Liturgies in Theory and in Practice
I play for funerals where the priest often 'moulds' the homily around the deceased's life. He obviously gets to know all about the person from talking to their relatives and gathers a few things about them which he might refer to in the homily. The family are also offered the opportunity to do a 'fa...
