Re: Come to the Manger

Having been "timed out" trying to edit that last post, I'll have to add some further thoughts in a separate one. Moral: don't hit the "submit" button too soon! Maybe SC was thinking of the second line of the hymn, where the second chord is indeed a supertonic seventh, except that...

Come to the Manger

As we were in danger of going off topic on the "Christmas on TV and Radio" thread, I'll start a new one before the moderators wade in. Indeed. A dreadful ditty, I've only ever had to endure it once. Deo Graatias. I was brought up with Come to the manger , and don't think it's quite as bad ...

Re: Liturgical Tourism

Yes, Oops, still travelling but due back at my own church next weekend. I'm at the moment in Roden, in the north of the Netherlands, where priests seem to be in even shorter supply than elsewhere. As a result, it was no surprise at all to find another Liturgy of the Word with Eucharist (LWWE) this m...

Re: Liturgical Tourism

My liturgical tourism last Sunday was also a liturgical sentimental journey. I first visited the church of Our Lady of Fatima, Alblasserdam, Netherlands in the 1960s, when it was newly opened and built in accordance with the latest ideas coming out of Vatican II. It is oval in shape, with the altar ...

Re: Liturgical Tourism

Oops might have walked out of this morning's Mass in Rotterdam Cathedral, but I stayed for the full hour and 20 minutes of it! The Kyrie , Gloria , Sanctus and Agnus Dei were all sung, in Greek/Latin, to the Missa Bonum est Confiteri Domino by Herman Strategier, of whom I had not heard but found aft...

Re: Liturgical Tourism

Last weekend I caught a Sunday morning Mass after stepping off a night train; this weekend I caught a Saturday vigil before boarding one. Munich city centre is remarkably rich in churches (as indeed is Bratislava) with three or four plus a cathedral in close proximity. My target was the 6.30 Mass at...

Re: Liturgical Tourism

Having found on completing this post that I'd inadvertently sent part of it prematurely, I thought it best to delete the partial version. Apologies for any inconvenience! Correct version follows below, unless there are any more typos I've missed!

Re: Liturgical Tourism

Oo Peter. I wonder if the English Mass there would have had stuff in Latin? Interspersed with the English. Or would it all have been in English. Go back next year and let me know. As well as Mass in English advertised on the web at the Prague church I couldn't find there was also one in Latin adver...

That reminded me that back in Blighty last Sunday was Corpus Chtisti. Mass in Prague was for the 9th Sunday, so presumably they celebrated Corpus Christi on Thursday. Knew I should have gone to Mass on Thursday before leaving England!

Re: Liturgical Tourism

My current bout of liturgical tourism started yesterday with a few hours between trains in Prague. The Czech Republic is reputedly the most atheist country in Europe and many of Prague's fine baroque churches seem to be used mainly as museums or concert halls, so I considered myself blessed to come ...

Re: Liturgical Tourism

There is already a thread on the Pentecost Sequence here: http://www.ssg.org.uk/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1067&hilit=Pentecost+Sequence#p13232 , though confusingly it seems to talk more about the Pentecost Vigil than the Pentecost Sequence. To get back to the topic of this thread, before se...

Re: Saturday evening Masses

When in Lugano, Switzerland recently, I attended a Vigil Mass in a local church round the corner from where I was staying. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to attend a Sunday Morning Mass for comparison but on the Saturday I had the impression that they were making a commendable effort with limited resou...

Thanks, JW - loved it. :D I nearly turned off after the first one but let the player run on to the next (Good King Wenceslas meets Nutcracker), which is even better!

Re: Musical accompaniment on Good Friday

... can I ask ITom if he has used This is the Wood of the Cross by Paul Inwood? It is a great piece for Good Friday. A best. It might be in Laudate. It isn't in Laudate but it is in Music for the Mass 2 . I've also got it in a book called Lord by your Cross ... and Resurrection: Celebrating Holy We...

Re: Missal tones advice

My suggestion for what it's worth would be to start on F, so that the Mystery of Faith tone uses F, Ab and Bb. For all the theory about modal tones, you're writing a tonal piece and in that context the Bb you finish on sounds like a dominant inviting a start on your tonic Eb. By the same token, the ...
