Re: Rite of Baptism within Mass
You might consider a suitable chant to get the procession down to the back of church where the baptismal party are greeted at the door and then launch into the Gloria (presuming that baptisms do not occur during Lent!) as a processional song to the altar.

Re: Mass in the Geez Rite
Ovwe the summer I attended Greenbelt Festival and three lectures by Rita Brock drew my attention to there being no depictions of Christ dead or crucified in the early western Church art until 960AD. I did wonder if this was also behind the presiding Fr Solomon's insistence on using a 'bare' cross fo...

Re: Mass in the Geez Rite
The language was predominately Geez and a reasonable amount of English but the 38 page booklet had translations to assist both parties. To answer SC I was not aware of a hat but I'd have to say the bread did look like bread ... none of this wafer thin stuff ... and so substantial as to suggest that ...

Mass in the Geez Rite
On Saturday 5 December I was privileged to be part of a celebration of Mass in the Geez Rite (Ethiopia and Eritrea) at St Marie's Cathedral Sheffield. Fr Solomon from Eritrea is on the staff there and concelebrated with two colleagues. The Mass lasted 2 hours and 15 minutes but this did not concern ...

Re: Introducing settings of new translations
Yes presbyter I am aware of at least one from another at the AGM. From my own humble pen comes a setting of Lord have mercy - Glory to God - Holy - 3 Memorial Acclamations - Lamb of God. I've also set 'What has passed our lips' as a post communion chant. I'm still working on instrumental parts and m...

Re: SSG Annual Conference
I regretted missing the rehearsal and Mass. It would have been good to hear Peter's new settings. I set off from Sheffield at 9am but got stranded in the M1 closure which explains my late arrival at 1.45pm. For the same reason I left early but got caught again to the extent that I was too late to go...

Re: Introducing settings of new translations
I understand that some composers of most popular published settings of the Ordinary have been approached to offer versions of their music adapted to fit the new texts. Where this is effective the transition (and some fears) may be eased. The same composers may also have new settings on the publisher...

Re: Gospel procession
At our cathedral the practice for a long time has been to sing the gospel greeting either side of the Gospel proclamation. Before the proclamation it covers the procession of the celebrant/deacon to the altar to collect the Book of the Gospels and take it to the ambo. After the proclamation it cover...

Re: St Therese
The relics come to Sheffield on Monday, spending three hours at a Carmelite Convent in the hills. Hallam diocese will have been aware of this and be there in number but I suspect its omission from the general programme respects both the splendid isolation of Kirk Edge and the habitually peaceful nat...

Re: How do dioceses fund music?
It's a while since I've worked with musicians from Southwark Diocese but I can't imagine that they will have changed so much that they are only obsessed with Marty Haugen's music, as is suggested. I found them very open to the many musicians on both sides of the pond who offer music of pastoral and ...

Re: Celtic
You have set my imagination running wild - next St Patrix day I will send the congregation out to BWV 577 and see what effect it has on the irish contingent.[/quote]
Yes nazard but then BWV 577 is 12/8. Perhaps discerning Celts will not respond!
