Grant that what we sing we may believe in our hearts and show forth in our lives.

Perhaps sing with our lips (or mouths?), which is the usual form of the prayer and preserves the balance with hearts and lives later on.

Re: Pope Francis moves to suppress liturgical abuses

The simplicity of the Eucharist given to us by Christ Jesus is quite evident from Scripture. But do we believe the nobility of the Liturgy originates in Christ or in the embellishments added by the Church down the centuries? Sorry, Bob, I don't know what your point is here. Is that a rhetorical que...

Re: Pope Francis moves to suppress liturgical abuses

...the thin end of a wedge that can produce plausible arguments to reduce the Liturgy to a simple ceremony of the Word and Eucharist. After all accounts of the Last Supper do not seem to refer to processions, choirs and complex musical repertoire. Surely the Liturgy is a (nobly) simple ceremony of ...

Re: Broadcast

I think this is the same establishment that regularly sings O for the wings of a dove at Pentecost. As far as Phos Hilaron is concerned, it's always possible to tweak the words, as we do with Simon Lole's version, A Song of the Light . We just change "now as we see the light of evening" to...

Re: Ordering of options in GIRM

Where I think you can posit an order of priority is in those cases where a paragraph lays out the purpose of a part of the rite, its theological rationale if you like, ... persons who wished to continue to use the great treasury of Gregorian chant at all costs, even if this meant excluding the peop...

You'd be right if Remembrance Sunday was an occasion for remembering wars, Alan. But it's an occasion for remembering those who died in wars, and surely that's a different matter?

I see from this report that Fr Gunter's term of office as a consultor for papal liturgies has come to an end.

Re: 'A Big Heart Open To God'

Simply stunning. I like this above all: The image of the church I like is that of the holy, faithful people of God. [...] And the church is the people of God on the journey through history, with joys and sorrows. [...] And all the faithful, considered as a whole, are infallible in matters of belief,...

Re: Going down to one Mass

...a procession doesn't need singing Yes it does or it becomes a queue! Music, perhaps, but not necessarily singing. Maybe the procession we're most familiar with is the bridal procession at the beginning of a wedding. I have led the music at weddings where this has been accompanied by singing, but...

Re: Traditional or Contemporary?

It is important to remember that the original SC statement was issued in a context where it could be assumed that all celebrations of the Mass would be in Latin. That is no longer true today — one "other thing" that is certainly not equal. In fact there is a case for saying that Gregorian...

Re: Adoremus in aeternum

I see that Allegri wrote a setting of it I don't think he did. There's a setting published in Downside Motets , vol. 1 no. 9 of 1904, edited by R.R. Terry, and it's marked "from Allegri". It must be adapted from something, but I don't know what. (I've asked a couple of times , but no-one'...
