Re: Coronavirus: Singing 'no more risky than talking'.......

I note that they say that loud singing produces 30 times more aerosol than normal speaking. Multiply that by a choir of, say, 12, and you have a potentialy lethal situation. Many amateur choir singers are incapable of singing quietly, and most choirs include people who like singing strongly in order...

Pre-recorded music in liturgy

In a Facebook forum, someone commented that he had been given to understand that the use of recorded music in Catholic liturgy was forbidden by Canon Law. I'm reposting my reply here, in case it is of interest. Canon Law says nothing about recorded music at all. People often say that things are forb...

Re: The Government's Guidelines for Public Worship

I think that they mean cleaning those parts of a church organ that the virus can land on! The virus can certainly land on parts of the organ that may not be easily accessible, including windchests and pipework. Whether a viral particle falling down inside a pipe could then be blown out again the ne...

Re: Bishops Conference Guidelines for the Celebration of Public Mass

Plenty of cantors in the US are singing, unmasked, behind plexiglass screens. They have mics to ensure that they are heard by those with hearing difficulties. The Salisbury experimental test results will be very useful, but do not go far enough (the same was true of the Munich experiments). I would ...

Re: Bishops Conference Guidelines for the Celebration of Public Mass

Some things that struck this reader: there should be no congregational singing at Mass. This appears to have been left deliberately or unintentionally ambiguous. Does this mean that cantors and choirs can now operate? Surely choirs are still hazardous, according to all the science. The role of the c...

Re: Redundancy after furlough

Assuming that the government support reduces or comes to an end, rather than making people redundant another solution for the diocese would be to put people on unpaid leave. This would enable them to "rehire" people when the situation improves without having fired them. I'll bet they haven...

Re: Singing in Church

Yes, this article has been doing the rounds over the past week. It should be read by all. Some people still don't get it, and maintain that wearing a mask helps to protect others against whatever you are exhaling. It may help to a certain extent with droplets, but not with aerosol, as the article ex...

Other monastic communities streaming include Ampleforth Abbey in Yorkshire and Minster Abbey in Kent.

Re: Live-streamed liturgy: what about music?

If not Zoom ? I assume Skype etc suffer from similar issues. Is there any particular fiddling about on Zoom that is worth trying or essential? Been working on Zoom for the last three weeks. Yesterday attended three-two-hour team meetings. Straightfoward. No need to download specific software, no fi...

Re: Live-streamed liturgy: what about music?

Hi everyone, At the moment in our parish we are publishing a running order with video sermon, readings and links to nice YouTube versions of appropriate music (hymns, Gloria etc). People are responding that they found it useful. We are going to experiment with a live streamed Mass on Zoom shortly a...

Re: Bidding Prayers and You

There are two different traditions of intercessions. The one traditionally used at Mass is the one where it becomes truly a prayer of the faithful, through the announcement of generic intentions of prayer which all than have an opportunity in silence to make their own in their individual circumstanc...

Re: Rome issues Triduum instructions

Bless and distribute palms later on in the year? It is indeed an option given by the official advice of the Congregation for Divine Worship, but I see no sense in it. Palms are a liturgical 'prop' for a procession that occurs only on Palm Sunday with a particular ritual significance on that day. No...

Re: Origins of the Preface

Good evening brethren and sistren, I wonder can anyone throw a little light on the origin and history of The Preface to the Eucharistic Prayer? To my shame I so often take the Preface for granted, often listening out for crucial cue-words such as "May our voices be one with them . . . " T...

Re: Rome issues Triduum instructions

It is a shame that the period from the 4th Sunday of Lent through to Pentecost and all the liturgies that come with it couldn't be moved to later in the year, in place of the Sundays of Ordinary Time. You can't pretend that you are somewhere different in the calendar. It's the same case as if you w...
