I think that with our armed forces being in Iraq and Afghanistan, people are all too aware of the sacrifice they make, especially in the less affluent areas that are recruited from. I know that in my own Liverpool school the pupils are very aware as most of them know people serving .

I think the sitting thing is quite common among organists. You will certainly find it in Cathedrals/University chapels etc. I think it is something to do with that being the place where they exercise their particular liturgical office. as for looking bored ............. let him without sin etc.

A difficult one, this. It raises more questions than answers:- Should it depend on the level of qualifications of the musician? Should a community expect to get the services of an FRCO or someone with a Liturgy/Music qualification for free? Should amateurs do it for love? Would a fee make it easier ...

Our PP refused point blank to even discuss it. Needless to say, we have not moved an inch towards it, if anything rather further away. _____________________________________________________________ How dare he. Do people need the priest's permission to study anyway? Surely not nowadays. Shocking. Alan

I seem to remember that Faith of our Fathers either appeared in a non-catholic hymn book, or was used by a seriously evangelical church, but for the life of me I can't call to mind where that snippet has come from. Perhaps someone else can help out? Freddy Faber would be spinning though, wouldn't he...

A bit of a reply to Oops, who I seem to have rattled a bit. Catholic -v- non catholic ...... I have an idea that it comes down to how we think we are saved. I think that many catholic theologs would have it that for us salvation comes from becoming members of the Body of Christ, a communal sort of a...

I wonder about this sort of material altogether. Should a line be drawn between public Sunday liturgy and the particular emotional needs of this or that person? I think it is interesting that material from a decidedly non-Catholic standpoint is causing questions as to its use at mass, which is a ver...

I'm not sure that this sort of touching base with the community is always such a negative thing. However a practical way to move towards the start of Mass is to have the musicians play over the entrance song/hymn/music, starting quietly and leading towards the actual Intro. After a while you can enc...

I seem to have set presbyter off on one. I was trying to see whether crux means cross or crucifix as there seems to be a difference of tradition among us about which is used on Good Friday. I thought perhaps the confusion was linguistically based. If I am alarmed and dismayed at turning the clock ba...

Found an answer to my own question on a site called catholic Doors (or some such.) Frequently Asked Questions regarding GOOD FRIDAY VENERATION OF THE CRUCIFIX Q. 1. What is the Catholic Church teaching regarding Good Friday veneration of the cross/crucifix? Should we venerate a cross or a crucifix? ...

I have to say, in 50 years of Good Friday liturgies all over the place, I have never seen a cross used. I wonder if the difference in tradition could be down to a simple bit of translation. Does crucis mean a cross, a crucifix or both? My O level Latin has been nailed to its perch, I'm afraid. But I...
