Music and Church: Cult and Culture 50 years after Musicam Sacram
Musicam Sacram was a document issued by the Church in 1967, setting out its vision for sacred music in the context of the major reforms to the Church’s liturgy that emerged from the Second Vatican Council. March 2017 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the document, and a conference entitled Music an...

Not lost but transferred to the following day. How is celebrating the Baptism on a Monday a bad thing, if one is in favour of celebrating the Epiphany on a Friday?

Re: The Baptism of the Lord
on Sunday Jesus was in the crib, and on Monday he was 30 years old. Not strictly in the crib for Epiphany (except in all the songs and Christmas cards, obviously). But the mismatch between infant in the crib and adult Jesus is one to embrace rather than mitigate: the mystery of the incarnation in a...

Regarding the disputed supertonic 7th, the opening chords are as follows (reading upwards) in G (the carol used to be printed in A but G is more usual these days): G-B-D-G, E-G-C#-A, F#-A-C natural-D or I - II7c - V7b In the second half of the refrain they are: B-G-D-G, A-E-C#-A, D-F#-C natural-D o...

Re: Remembrance Sunday or 33rd of the Year
The Liturgy Office web site says On Rembrance Sunday (2nd Sunday in November) one Mass may be replaced by a Mass for the Dead , so I guess the permission applies nationally. At my place of worship, rather than having a Requiem, we have an act of Remembrance at 11.00 (normal start time for the Mass),...

And forgive my grouchiness, but every time the Leeds music department post a job vacancy here the response is the same.

On the translation of GIRM 299, there's a discussion on Pray Tell at the moment, including this helpful comment : A more idiomatic and more accurate rendering would be: Wherever it is possible to do so, the main altar should be separated from the wall, so that it is easy to walk around it and to cel...

I think he's asking in a personal capacity, rather than giving orders; I don't believe he has the authority to do the latter. The Catholic Herald is spinning it by using the verb ask , as if it was a courteous instruction from on high, but not so long ago he was urging , which, in spite of the seemi...

Re: Liturgical Tourism
One theory why the Kyrie remained in Greek is that some of the settings that we use today (e.g. Kyrie XVI) were already in existence at the time the liturgy went from Greek into Latin, and so they simply kept them. I think the chronology might be wrong for that. The Kyrie isn't mentioned in the Lat...

quaeritor wrote:what happens on days when Ritual Masses are not allowed!
If a Ritual Mass is not allowed, it's because the day is too important (Holy Week, Easter Octave, Solemnities, Sundays of Advent/Lent/Easter). These have their own rubrics as to whether the Gloria is included in the Mass of the day or not.

UK Roman Missal, p 1186 (ritual masses): 4. FOR THE CONFERRAL OF CONFIRMATION This Mass is used, with the colour red or white, or a festive colour, at the conferral of Confirmation on days when Ritual Masses are permitted. The Gloria in excelsis (Glory to God in the highest) is said. The Creed, howe...

I think the one who is still alive is Gerard J. Yep, that's the one. He had a nice article in the Tablet a couple of weeks ago on Amoris Laetitia , pointing up the distinction between making a change to a teaching of the Church, and making an improvement on the sensitivity with which it might be in...
