Hmmmmm - and I wonder. If "Father" has a Deacon with him, could "Father" go out with the children and preside at CLOW, leaving the Deacon to preside at the adult celebration of the Word? I've never seen or heard of it being done - has anyone?

Re: Children's Liturgy

There are children in our parish who have received the Sacraments of Reconciliaton and Communion TT Anyone brave enough to start a thread on ages and stages of Christian initiation then? Should we baptise infants who we will never see at Sunday Mass? Does Pius X's lowering of the age of First Commu...

Re: Children's Liturgy

Another problem with CLOW is the question of when children are too old for it. There are children in our parish who have received the Sacraments of Reconciliaton and Communion and continue to attend the CLOW each Sunday. When should they stop? TT Directory on Masses with Children is effective until...

Go have your holiday. I'm entitled to three Sundays off in a year in this diocese. Why shouldn't you be? (See Code of Canon Law for clergy holidays - not to hand for exact reference)

Well speaking as one who took a solemn oath to preach, teach and uphold Catholic doctrine prior to ordination as Deacon - it would indeed be a sin were I to divert from that.

Whenever I listen to a presentation, I can tell if the person speaking a) knows the subject and b) has a passion about what they do. All right but I would suggest that homiletics doesn't quite fit into the mould of secular presentations: lectures, business presentations or even talks on jam-making ...

....someone who is simply not good at preaching.... The first task in the 'job description' of a priest is that he is a preacher. When he preaches he acts in the person of Christ. Am I always making the hearts of disciples burn within them? I wish I were. But I do wonder if the faithful have much (...

If we used, for example, Sir Cliff Richard's setting of the Lord's Prayer within Mass, would that be an appropriate style? Or plainsong Latin; plainsong English; the 'Echo' setting; Chris Walker's 'Celtic' or his 1975 version ; Alan Rees' or Bevenot's chants; the Taizé 'Pater Noster'; the 'Caribbe...

Given that the Church only permits ordained ministers to preach, can presbyter enlighten us as to what training is given to the clergy to enable to do this effectively? In my seminary days - late 1980s - we were plunged into homiletics right from week one of year one. Nothing like being thrown in a...

Believe it or not, there are still many parishes in poor areas where the majority of people do not possess cars. I can think of some inner-city parishes where the residents possess very little indeed and life is simply a struggle for survival, yet the faithful elderly somehow get to Mass. Public tra...

We used to have a 'sermon'... (from the Q and A page)

Someone asked, "We used to have a ‘sermon’ and now we have a ‘homily’. What is the difference?" The Society's reply is: Answer In brief, a homily is an explanation of Scripture, whereas a sermon may be an address on any religious matter (eg the miraculous medal). Since the 1970 revision of t...
