Re: Regulation of New Hymnals and their use

The Responsorial Psalm in the Liturgy of the Word has a very particular status. It is an integral part of the proclamation of the Word of God from the Bible. That is why it must be taken to the letter from the version of Holy Scripture approved for the purpose by the local Bishops' Conference (or th...

Re: EASTER VIGIL

What time are people starting this year? Sunset in London is at 18.31 (i.e. before the clocks change). Starting at 19.30 or later would ensure comparative darkness. No excuse this year! It must be emphasised that the Easter Vigil is to take place at night . It is not an evening event. Isn't 19.30 t...

Re: Making time for prayer before Mass

Eucharistic adoration, being a type of reservation of the Blessed Sacrament, is a prolongation of the eucharistic presence established at Mass. It is therefore preferable to hold it after Mass than before, and even better with a host consecrated at that Mass. This also preserves the gradual revelati...

Re: Making time for prayer before Mass

Hear, hear! A lot depends on the acoustics of the church, the floor surfaces, the noisiness of the narthex/porch and the soundproofness of the doors into the church, the social habits of the folk and a thousand other local circumstances. Some people might aver that reverently silent churches are unf...

Chant Antiphons for Lent

I offer herewith some workshop-status chant settings of the Entrance and Communion Antiphons for the Sundays of Lent. As this website is 'non-commercial' and the texts are not mandatory set liturgical texts, this publication is not subject to approval from anyone! It might even encourage others to d...

Re: Ordo Queries

Does this mean that Alma Redemptoris gives way to Ave Regina on the Monday after The Baptism of Our Lord? Or does this happen from February 2nd? By tradition, after February 2nd. The General Instruction of the Divine Office (no 92) says that, at the end of Compline "one of the antiphons of the...

Re: Ordo Queries

To clarify (hopefully ): in the Ordinary Time section of the Missal, the 2nd to 33rd weeks are headed 'Nth Sunday in Ordinary Time'. But the 1st and 34th weeks are headed 'Nth Week in Ordinary Time' and begin with the rubric 'On the first/last Sunday of Ordinary Time there occurs the feast of...' So...

Re: Is there a place for dance within Catholic Liturgy

There is indeed a cultural dimension in play here. And there are some important lessons for participation. You've probably seen a video of an Offertory procession (to use the shorthand term) taking place in Africa. The participants in the procession are dancing (or shimmying, which Cardinal Arinze s...

Re: Ordo Queries

The answer is contained in article 133 of the General Instruction on the Liturgy of the Hours, where it states that the four-week cycle starts on the First Sunday of Advent, the First ordinary Sunday of the Year, the First Sunday of Lent and Easter Sunday. When Ordinary Time restarts after Pentecos...

Re: Ordo Queries

Is anyone aware of clear written instructions on what happens to the Psalter Week following Christmas Day? Does anyone know an official written source which settles the matter? The answer is contained in article 133 of the General Instruction on the Liturgy of the Hours, where it states that the fo...

Re: 4 o'clock Vigil service?

The Christmas Vigil Mass is the one for the morning of 24 December , usable up to about 4pm when it is sufficiently dark for Vespers and the liturgical day changes to the 25th. Any Mass taking place after that is in fact an anticipated Mass of Christmas , and should use the texts of Christmas Midni...

Re: (M)any takers for the old Mass?

Don't agree with this at all. High Mass was normal on Sundays as well as on solemnities in the part of the world where I grew up, when many parishes would have a couple of curates in addition to the parish priest, but the Missa Cantata was a rarity — priests were not so comfortable doing it on thei...
