Re: Catholic periodicals

Concerning readership, am I the only one who is slightly concerned that The Tablet plays on it's AB readership to advertisers, and then goes on about Catholic Social Teaching and humanitarian issues? Whilst accepting the influence that AB readerships tend to have, I'm not comfortable with it. There...

Re: Catholic periodicals

Southern Comfort wrote:My original comment about the last of these as the only serious, intellectual Catholic weekly periodical in the UK was based largely on content and readership level, not on location on the left-right spectrum.

Are your 'readership levels' (A, B etc.) references to socio-economic groups?

Re: Catholic periodicals

The Universe is no longer registered with ABC, so its circulation seems rather nebulous given the substantial piles of free copies one often sees at the back of churches and in parish halls. No doubt many people pick it up, but with the many freebies around it is less easy to determine its active s...

Re: Catholic periodicals

Many thanks for splitting this off from the other thread musicus. Well, as you have done this, I may as well set the ball rolling with my thumbnail sketch of the state of ‘Catholic periodicals’ in Britain today. As I see it, we have two principal weekly publications: The Tablet and the Catholic Hera...

Re: Malurgy

I imagine the Sunday homilies are about fifteen minutes in length in my parish. It has never occurred to me to time them(!), as - thankfully - they are invariably both uplifting and educational. I do not envy parish priests trying to achieve a balance of content and presentation in order that the di...

Re: Malurgy

I doubt a showman like this is very much interested in the structure of the Mass. Here is last week's 57 minute sermon: http://saintsabina.org/video-sermon-110412.html

And they are all available to buy on CD or DVD.

Re: Sunday Celebrations in the absence of a priest

............We do have it pretty easy here! At the moment, perhaps. Not in ten years time though. For example, I know how many seminarians there are at Oscott - but I'm not at liberty to divulge the number. Let's just say that the number of seminarians ordained in the next few years will be vastly ...

Re: Sunday Celebrations in the absence of a priest

Perhaps one way to consider this would be to ask, 'How would our sisters and brothers in the Middle East, Africa and the former USSR tackle such a challenge? We do have it pretty easy here!

Re: Year of Faith

We now have a Year of Faith noticeboard at the back of church detailing our activities and those of other parishes within the diocese. There seems to be plenty going on, ranging from prayer events through to talks and presentations. Obviously there are pragmatic issues about picking the best day and...

Re: Year of Faith

It is unfortunate that there is a widespread tendency to position our Faith, the Church and individual priests and laity on a Left-Right political spectrum. Political science is a relatively recent human construct, with all the potential for flaw stemming from our sinfulness. It is unwise to think o...

Re: Year of Faith

Here in the Leeds Diocese we have been given cards with prayers on for the YofF. The cards are made up of the Angelus on one side and the Anima Christi on the other. About 2 minute before Mass, Fr comes out and leads the congregation in the Angelus - at every Mass. Individual praying of the Anima C...

As mcb says, stick with us. I don't think you're ugly, sectarian or prejudiced - just, maybe, in need of a bit more formation....... so don't be surprised if you are shocked (into deeper faith) when you explore the Catechism.

Thank you!

Re: Year of Faith

I wonder if the his first draft used 'papal bunker'? Why might you wonder that? BobHayes reply: Tone maybe? Sorry I don't have a link to that at hand. Just give me the date and page number – I can look it up. Bob Hayes reply: Say please! Link: m It doesn't do to take The Tablet too seriously. I tak...
