Re: Nineteenth Sunday in Ordianry Time - Year <A>

The choir of Wellington cathedral appeared halfway though to sing Sanctus and Agnus Dei - they had been singing evensong at Westminster Abbey! I recall the liturgical principle that no-one should exercise more than one ministry at any one celebration, but what about exercising only one ministry at ...

Re: Weddings in Ireland

Posting on behalf of organist who is working hard!! No alas we tried hard to have input!!! Lat year our daughter married with full sung Mass, choir of friends etc. I sang the psalm, something the Irish contingent loved, and although bragging was talked about for ages afterwards. Son insisited he wa...

Re: Weddings in Ireland

Although I am of Irish descent on my father's side, I have never visited Ireland and therefore have no experience if Irish weddings. With no disrespect intended to anyone, I don't think that the haphazard choice as to which parts of the Ordinary were sung was necesarily a local/national tradition, b...

Re: Pipes versus digital

asb is rather modestly not letting on that Jeremy Meager is the new managing director of Viscount, and that they are trying very hard to undo some of the problems that have arisen in the past because they subcontracted their installations to agents, some of whom were very good and some of whom were...

Re: Pipes versus digital

Thanks for the welcome! The Pipes vs. Digital argument has been on the go for many years. As a professional organist, it has always been a bone of contention to arrive at a digital that is simply landed on the floor without any voicing or matching to the building. There are dealers who make their o...

I wanted a soft 32' on ours. It works superbly (albeit helped by externals) - FACT! :D

Re: Pipes versus digital

I do not subscribe to the camp that implies 'one size fits all' - like many of the Viscount / Allen et al. If it has a 'Model' number it is going to come in a box!!! I want to give many hours to the design of this organ. I want it designed and built for our church - I don't want something dropped o...

Re: Organists

This seems as good a topic heading as anywhere, and may "resurrect" it. When playing a "strange" organ (ie in another church to my own) I often come across the most unhelpful, even bizarre, settings on the combination pistons. If there is a "spare" channel on a multi-le...

Re: Pipes versus digital

I have yet to hear a digital which has a realistic Open Diapason 8 on it. Am I the only person on this thread who is sticking up for the Pipe organ? Is my church the only Catholic church which still has a pipe organ and has not 'invested' in a digital. If so, I am really thankful as our organ is mo...

That doesn't mean that they don't exist! PM me and arrange to come and try!

If we had room for, and funds for pipes, pipes it would be - naturally. We have neiher space nor money, but we now have a damned good organ!

Re: Pipes versus digital

There are many situations in which a sampled digital electronic can be a better solution than a pipe organ. Many of the continuo pipe organs that have been installed in RC churches in recent decades in pursuit of one particular consultant's ideology are unsuited for today's liturgical requirements....

Re: Pipes versus digital

Picking up on the previous posting, the same could surely be said of a Diapason 8 on two diferent pipe organs. I can think of 2 pipe organs near me; on one, the great Diapason 8 sounds fine on its own, eg for a Stanley slow movement, whereas on the other the same stop is too "woolly" and i...

Re: Horrors

Didn't some idiot set the Sanctus to the Eastenders tune? I like the Dambusters theme itself but as a Gloria???? It was the Gloria - and I have a feeling that Barry Rose was involved somewhere along the line...... I've never come across the Dambusters Gloria, but it does go rather well to "God...
