You'll have noticed from the unstoppable tide of responses to your post that humour is completely wasted in here. "Like a dry, weary land without water".

FWIW The protty fora are even more arid than this one when it comes to humour.

Don't give up though. I enjoyed them.

Musicus said Hey, this is only meant to be a mild diversion, people! I am not suggesting that a four-hymn sandwich is, or ought to be, the norm; or that popularity is an acceptable criterion for choice. I understood exactly what you meant Musicus, and I'm only a Welshman who's not expected to fully ...

Crucifixion (John Stainer)

Can anyone recommend a recording of "The Crucifixion" by Stainer that is unabridged? Most recordings have verses cut from the hymns, or hymns completely ommitted, or the lengthy but delicious organ introduction to the "Procession to Calvary" mercilessly chopped.

Thanks in advance brethren. :)

I wish too that the Alto line of SATB and SA hymns and songs could be included in Melody Edition. (Yes, I know it wouldn't be a melody only edition then but it seems such a wasted opportunity). The benefits would be two-fold: *In places where unison singing is the norm sight-singers could add the se...

CH for E has 56 pages of them in every single words-only edition. Our smallish parish has 200 copies. I agree, Dot, I can see the logic and the need in the choir/accompaniment editions having indexes and extensive ones at that, but the words-only edition (which are in alphabetical order anyway) coul...

Dunnow the source of this but it fits the tune "Repton

Dear Lord and Father of mankind forgive out foolish ways. For most of us when asked our mind Admit we still most pleasure find in hymns of ancient days. The simple lyrics from the start Of many a modern song Are far too trite to touch the heart, Enshrine no poetry, no art And go on far too long. Oh ...

We did the same - old box of whistles out, digital job in. I must say that we have experienced none of the problems or difficulties you desribe. Either your organist/choirmaster and p.p. are particularly stupid or we are wonderfully blessed. What make of organ is it btw? I ask coz like pipe organs, ...

Organists are an interesting species to be sure. Best of all is the sung parish mass when the music-man and the priest aren't both aware of what's planned. (Doesn't happen in our parishes of course, but at St. Judas Iscariott's down the road . . .) Classics include: P/ " . . . in the joyful hymn of ...

Couldn't the cost of hymn books be kept a little lower if extensive indices were not printed at the back of every single volume, even the words-only editions? We have 200 words-only copies of "Celebration Hymnal for Everyone" (yes, I know, but I didn't know about "Laudate" when we bought them ) and ...

Thanks for your help. I hadn't considered `Her virgin eyes . . . ' I does indeed fit the meter perfectly.

Pantyfedwyn is a rock-solid Welsh tune, often a firm favourite at eistedfodau with guaranteed full-throated reprises. :P

The CLOW in our parish was a curious affair. The leaders would take the kids out at the end of the Entrace/gathering song, not returning to the assembly 'til after the hymn at the preparation of the gifts - well into the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Then there used to be this curious practice of holdin...

Does anyone know of a Marian hymn the meter of which is eight ten-syllable lines? I want one to fit the Welsh tune Pantyfedwyn.

I think I may have mixed my metaphors there, maybe either tailor-made or made-to-measure would have been better employed to describe responsorial psalms and other mass music composed to match my choral resources. :)
