Re: Good Friday Reproaches: to accompany?

Forgot to say that Music in the Mass does after all bear a tiny printing date of February 1969, so maybe a year earlier than I had thought. At that time Charles Grant was Bishop of Northampton (he wrote the Foreword in his capacity as the Chairman of the National Commission for Catholic Church Music...

Re: Good Friday Reproaches: to accompany?

Extract from para 7 of "De Concentibus in Ecclesiis": In accordance with tradition, the organ should remain silent during the penitential seasons (Lent and Holy Week), during Advent and the Liturgy for the Dead. When, however, there is real pastoral need, the organ can be used to accompany...

Re: Active Participation?

Like any other reform, this one was done both badly and well, depending on where you were (un)lucky enough to be. One major problem was that it was badly introduced, indeed mostly not properly introduced at all. The bishops did not form their clergy, so the clergy did not form their people...... and...

Re: Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion

It is quite untrue to say that a Minister of Communion cannot give a blessing. I have a priest friend who, when someone says to him "Please, Father, will you bless my rosary?", responds with a very firm " No! ", and then adds "...but I'll ask God to". This is precisely ...

Re: Good Friday Reproaches: to accompany?

Peter Jones's is an excellent setting - probably the best around. The latest document of the universal Church to pronounce on the use of the organ in penitential seasons is the document on Concerts in Churches (1987) which says that the organ may always be used for the purposes of supporting the sin...

LOL! It's all automated - nothing personal!

I know. How does it cope with the thing you use for opening bottles of wine, I wonder?

Interesting to see that this site is apparently in breach of ICEL copyright on every page except the first. And it says it's Carmelite...

Re: RR Terry's Mass of Saint Gregory

Another piece written for the Society was Lennox Berkeley's Salve Regina (unison and organ, Chester 4725, 1955). My copy of the score has the dedication For the Society of St.Gregory above the beginning of the music, but the outside cover has a later printed line added at the top: Church Music Assoc...

Re: World Youth Day Mass, with new translation

It seems that Australia has asked the Holy See for permission to use the new translation of the Gloria and Sanctus for World Youth Day and have received it. So pedantically that permission would be only for Australia. But, and it is a big but, how many settings of the Gloria and Sanctus that we pre...

Re: Congregational Singing

At least two people have mentioned the Celtic Mass. They don't mean that. They mean the Celtic Liturgy, the Eucharistic acclamations that Chris Walker wrote back in the 1980s when he was at Clifton, and which are well known. The Celtic Mass is a different animal, also by CW, that is scarcely known o...

Re: Congregational Singing

A choir is preferable to a cantor for 2 reasons: 1 - a choir can have one person missing without being wholly absent and 2 - it's more comfortable for a member of the congregation to join in as an additional member of a large group, a chorus, then to sing along with a (usually amplified) soloist. T...
