Of course, several places might not be under full steam right now. If you were to visit us in the next couple of weeks you would find, for example, that the Gloria is not sung. We don't have a through-composed Gloria in our repertoire – that's my fault and is top of my list for sorting soon – an...

Re: What are they up to?

Dear Mancunian residing in Nottingham, You are quoting me from an altogether different thread. Although, judging from this one, I am not alone in my thoughts. However, your cathedral is definitely not one of those I had in mind. In fact, the reports I've heard of music at your new place of worship h...

Re: latin stuff

...instead of Diocesan bods training award winning choirs, they give training to parishes, whole parishes, one a month demonstrating some simple liturgically correct music. Is it really to much to ask. A bit of modeling not a document somewhere that I have never seen. ... Contact your diocesan musi...

Apologies, dear asb, wasn't meaning to criticise. Just saying that I can't see anything stopping the Novena going ahead. Also, despite papal pronouncements, I'm sure that in many parishes novenas remain a private devotion or are celebrated by a small gathering.

I love Latin and chant and will happily warble my way through Cum Jubilo and De Angelis while bobbing my rubber duck. As far as I'm concerned we can sing every single note in Latin. But the congregations I work with – admittedly, near their 80s than their 40s – aren't easily persuaded. Yes, ASB,...

Then read it again – nothing there to stop you having your Novena and nothing to stop you having it at any other time. If we're bandying church documents, then remember that "by the venerable tradition of the universal Church, morning prayer and evening prayer are the two hinges on which the d...

But that's a rather bald statement – it doesn't explain why.
How does the promotion of Latin assist our spiritual growth?
How does it assist us in spreading the word?
I've been asking the question for years – still no answer.

And there's still the unsanswered question: Why do you want to pray in Latin? If it's simply a question of personal preference then go ahead. And I would ask those who feel they can we pray in second language to remember those of us who can't. I have massive problems understanding the Liturgy in Eng...

You can still have your Novena – just start nine days before Pentecost – but these are private devitions rather than public liturgy. I'm a tad wary of such things – do A, B and C on X occasions and your dreams will come true. We see much of such things up here in small ads in the local papers:...

If I understand this correctly, part of the reasoning is to upgrade these feasts – moving them to a time when the parish is already together to celebrate. But I can't help thinking it will help our priests a lot too. Our parish priest has to celebrate a minimum of three Masses on Holydays, one in ...

Am unsure about directives from the Archbishop himself (that doesn't mean there haven't been any) but I do know that members of the Liturgy Commission have received several training days so far. However, I must admit, little has yet trickled down to we lesser mortals. Are other dioceses ahead of us ...
