Re: Congregational singing of hymns

There are a number of dynamics at work: ⋅  The regular attendance of catholics at mass is underpinned by the Sunday obligation, which does change the cross-section of congregations ⋅  Catholics who like to sing will (where there is a choice of parishes) tend towards parishes whic...

Re: Congregational singing of hymns

Once you have got a congregation used to playovers in strict time, it works like a dream. All you have to do is remember to shorten the last note of the playover to give the "breath". Rather than a rallentando at the end of the playover, a lengthened chord works well, with a strict two be...

Re: Congregational singing of hymns

What works for me/my congregations is a VERY slight lengthening of the first note of the verse (especially verse 1) followed by a clear articulation to the next beat. Fortunately, a significant proportion of my congregation can see me, so if I lean forward as I start a verse they can come in with c...

Re: Congregational singing of hymns

Some years ago I found this essay on the subject. While I don't agree with everything he says, and lack the skill for some of his more advanced suggestions, a number of the basic points are sound: confidence in the tempo, and confidence in when to come in matter a lot. And for a congregation to sing...

Re: First Mass in new translation: so how was it?

"Lord, I am not worthy": everyone seemed to know the revised translation from memory! I have to say, for the last forty years it has grated every time I said " to receive you " as an English version of " ut intres sub tectum meum ". Perhaps I am not alone in saying tha...

Re: Dumbfounded and Disillusioned

If my parish priest preached like that, I'd write to the Archbishop: not in outrage, but to assist His Grace in in the continuous formation of his clergy. Happily the last time I felt so moved was 6 priests and 2 bishops ago. His Grace wrote back thanking me for putting him in the picture. In my bus...

Re: First Mass in new translation: so how was it?

Ours was said by our newly ordained ordinariate assistant priest. So in a few months he has gone from CofE eucharist to the old translation and the new translation. And the latter in the same week as his daughter starts school. And our PP is on retreat the next couple of weeks, so weekday masses hav...

Re: Papal Visit

First time I've been online since CP - was absolutely pooped when I got home yesterday and crashed for many hours. From a choir member's viewpoint, almost everything came off fantastically well (we were a little uncertain during the eucharistic acclamation), and we were just frustrated at the Elgar ...

Forum Members singing at Cofton Park

Just pulling out a thread so we can declare our hands.

I will be at CP on Sat and Sun in the Bass section of the Birmingham AD choir. Not decided what I'll be wearing on Sat, but will wear my Old Stonyhurst tie on Sun (blue and gold diagonal stripes).

Re: Swine flu

Hopefully, everyone who is advocating that people should stay away from work when they have a cold or 'flu won't object when Sunday Masses have to be cancelled because the priest has a cold/'flu. Well, if a priest has a temperature over 100, and if a substitute can't be found, I would have thought ...

If you are still infectious, yes.

Re: Swine flu

I get the feeling that in this and other spheres the approach is:

a) Something must be done
b) This is something
c) Therefore, this must be done

For those of my generation, this can be summarised as "DO something, Mutley".
