Re: Pentecost Sequence

First, to answer Hare's original question, I used the Sequence at the Vigil, because the Wales Ordo (worded similarly to the Southwark one) specified it. Second, I celebrated the "Pentecost Vigil Mass" because the Ordo and the notes in the Lectionary indicated that the Vigil mass was the p...

Re: Ecumenical Evening Prayer

Excellent ideas above, and just a few more for the pot: You can change the reading to one tailored to your ocassion. If you don't go for the "Cathedral style", you can still solemnize the Magnificat by incensing the altar at this point. You might consider using the ICET text of the Magnifi...

Four Masses of Reparation

Our bishops write: “We invite Catholics in England and Wales to make the four Fridays in May 2010 special days of prayer. Even when we are lost for words, we can place ourselves in silent prayer. We invite Catholics on these days to come before the Blessed Sacrament in our parishes to pray to God fo...

Re: How low is your Low Sunday?

In previous years, being the Octave day of Easter, treated like a solemnity with full sung Eucharistic prayer (Mass of Creation) which I will use again on Ascension, Pentecost, Trinity & Corpus Christi. This year... I was on leave so don't know what the supply priest did but music would have bee...

Easter comes but once a year....

I have survived Easter! My 3rd as a priest and my first with adult baptisms. Most of what was planned worked very well. But - 2 snags, and would be interested to know how other parishes cope. ONE - the dunking of the Paschal Candle Having processed into church, sung the exsultet, experienced all nin...

It's not a coronation...

Paul Inwood's article on community-sensitive liturgy in the latest Music & Liturgy reminded me of a common saying by our Rector when a student was approved for a ministry, candidacy or diaconate - ""It's not a coronation..." he would warn the candidates. I was very mindful of this...

Re: Lord Jesus, think on me

Apologies... ignore my comments about a lengthened Franconia . The tune I know from seminary is definitely the Southwell published in Laudate , complete with minims, a tune which bears no resemblance whatsoever to the one called "Southwell" embedded in http://www.oremus.org/hymnal/l/l347a....

Re: Lord Jesus, think on me

The only setting I'm familiar with, mostly from seminary is Franconia as rendered at http://www.oremus.org/hymnal/mid/franconi.mid except that the first note feels too short in the midi file.

Re: Doxology in Children's EP

When I use the Children's EP in my primary school I tend to sing the Glynn-Whitehead setting of the doxology promoted by CJM Music. The priest's text is standard, the AMEN is elaborated (Amen, we lift our hearts and voices to you... etc.) - I'm willing to allow elaboration after the Amen as not intr...

Re: CRB, ISA, Vetting and Barring and all that.

I believe the idea is that anyone in a leadership type role needs to be checked, even where they have no contact with children, because of the danger that they could abuse the 'authority' that this leadership role gives them. Almost, but not quite. I don't have to have my parish caretaker or newsle...

Re: But what if we didn't "just say wait"?

The big problem is that no one yet knows what the implementation date will be. (4) However, the Order of Mass might be introduced earlier, ahead of the rest of the Missal. (Those with long memories will remember that, the last time we went through this, the Order of Mass came along in 1969, followe...

Re: Gospel reader

I strongly suspect that the situation facing Oops was that which is described in Chapter I and not Chapter II. Para 19 of the directory allows any ONE (but only one) of the Chapter I concessions to be used in a Chapter II Mass - with the Bishop's permission! But I know of no provision for a non-ord...

Re: Conditional Baptism

But doesn't this require a judgement call that the person has probably committed a grave sin since being validly baptised? No more so than in requiring children to make First Confession before First Communion. Why should an adult be exempt from what is required from a child who has only just attain...

Re: Conditional Baptism

I am sure the Orthodox would have something interesting to say about the completion of initiation having to be preceded by confession... My fault, for imprecise language... here I have used the word "complete" to imply the case when a person was incompletely initiated by being baptised (o...
