Re: Ding Dong Merrily on high - need pronunciation help

Quite so. Whatever I tell the choir, my multi-cultural Sheffield city centre congregation will sing more loudly whatever they - eee ba gum, ecky thump, luv, katanga, mele kamakakaou - want!

Christmas sequences

Has anyone ever looked at the provision for Sequences at Christmas? For the first time in 35+ years I've been steered in that direction by my PP and we have unearthed Latin texts still used in the Dominican Missal (but obtained from the internet). Fortunately in my choir I have a fine translator and...

Re: Teaching the teachers

I was in a Sheffield primary school yesterday to support its celebration of Advent in a mass. Musically we did the following: Gathering: Come and join the circle (from Share the Light - Farrell) Lighting of candle in Wreath: Christmas is coming (from Innkeepers & Lightsleepers - Wild Goose) Psal...

Re: Moving the sign of peace

This debate has raged for decades already. I am presuming that Gwyn's scriptural reference is the bit about before you bring your gifts make peace with each other. Regardless of when the peace is exchanged I also presume that the liturgical designers never had it in mind that we would find ourselves...

Re: Vespers

I inherited a practice of using anglican chant for the psalms of Sung Sunday morning prayer in my place of worship. That was fifteen years ago and I replaced it with settings from France, filling in the gaps with some of my ditties. I had obtained permission from Notre Dame, Paris to use and adapt t...

Re: Annual James Crichton Memorial Lecture

Oopsorganist exemplifies the point made by many that on Saturday we came together in good numbers as a society but did not know who we were. It would have been good to have shared identities. Online many folk are anonymous and after a day together we remained just that. I enjoyed the day and thank a...

Re: Antiphons and hymns

I agree with Southern Comfort (but prefer a malt!). Lord Jesus, Christ shall I stand still (from the early Wild Goose Songs 2 collection - green book) is one of many great texts from this stable which in this case is not content just to leave us staring at the cross but to move us on from/through it...

Re: Lateran Basilica

Doc, I think this must be an error in the Ordo. Did you get the music I sent to your Church address?

Re: Lateran Basilica

Asb is quite correct about 1997. Time plays tricks doesn't it and I have further checked the score and I must have updated it in 2000 after we had used it chez moi a few times. We used it for the annual Dedication of the Cathedral Solemnity which eerily enough falls on 11 september. The words of the...

Re: Lateran Basilica

I was fortunate enough to be invited by Stephen Dean to write a setting of this psalm for a 2000 National Choirs Festival event at Southwark Cathedral. As I recall the organist decide not to play the 3rd verse and this left me feeling somewhat wanting more at the podium. In the coach journey back to...

Re: Settings of psalm 135/6

It is fairly easy to adapt John Bell's setting of 'O Give thanks to the Lord (for his love endures for ever) to this psalm. I agree this is one of those psalms that composers do not seem to be much interested in.

Thanks for the very appropriate suggestion Matt. I will contact the visually impaired singer who normally sings that verse immediately.

Thanks ... may be I'll consider this when we bless the new toilets in the Cathedral.
