Re: Remembrance Sunday

The Gelineau 'Nunc Dimittis' (At last all powerful master you give leave to your servant to go' ) is very easy. It was in the first 'Praise the Lord' and other hymn collections. Thank you for this suggestion. I have gone for the Gelineau (Jelly Nose?) Nunc Dimittis, but written a new antiphon as th...

Re: Remembrance Sunday

Yes - a lot has been lost for no apparent reason. I was looking at the readings for the third Sunday of Advent, meaning to choose the music, and I saw that the Nunc Dimittis features in the Gospel. We used to say it a lot until it suddenly disappeared. Are there any similarly simple settings of the ...

Gloriously gloomy! Thank you for posting it. It may come in handy sometime.

The price was very nostalgic.

Re: Pipe Organs and Organists - Dying out?

Thomas, although I largely agree with what you write, I am not happy about your idea of putting a 16' stop on the great. Our venerable parish toaster, a Viscount, has a 16' Bourdon on the great, and it is a pain in the unmentionable. The problem is that poor organists like to draw it because it mudd...

Our total list is rather different: Pre mass voluntary: Priere, A. Guilmant Opening hymn: To Christ the Prince of Peace (Narenza) Last Post, a minute's silence, Reveille Mass setting: Peter Jones' Parish Mass Offertory: O God of earth and altar (Cruger) Communion: Be still my soul (Finlandia) - I wa...

Remembrance Sunday

Remembrance Sunday is coming up, and every year I get pressurised into playing "O God our help in ages past", to St. Anne, which I personally consider to be one of the plainest and most tedious tunes to have stayed in print for very long. However, I have found this descant by Alan Gray whi...

Re: Magnum Principium

... I would love to see an authorised metrical version of the Gloria that parishes with no musians could sing to a hymn tune. To only be used when sung. Something to Long Metre would offer plenty of scope for a variety of tunes. ... That could be a good idea if done well enough. I cannot get excite...

Re: First communion music

We could easily get bitter about such things, but its just the way of things. Remember the parable of the sower. You have to spread a lot of seed to get a crop, and it doesn't all work out. Just keep on sowing and rejoice when you achieve anything.

Re: Pentecost sequence.

I think the issue of mediocre musicians, both choirs and instrumentalists, is a very important one. Personally I find badly performed music a great distraction from prayer. I have come across people who say things like: "it doesn't matter how it sounds, so long as we make a joyful noise to the ...

An interesting statement. How did you establish the truth of it?

Re: Pentecost sequence.

Thank you for that suggestion. I did the 'Christians to the Paschal Victim' translation from the missal to any only slightly adapted tone this year, and was very pleased with the way it went. The responses from the priest and congregation were all favourable.

Re: Prof Eamon Duffy on liturgical music

These two terms wind me up. "Performance Music" Well, without a performance music is just marks on a sheet of paper. I know a few of us can look at printed music and imagine the sound, but that is hardly what I consider to be music in the liturgy. Of course, some music is so bad that it re...

blackthorn fairy wrote: Fri May 05, 2017 2:56 pm As above, we use Holy Spirit Lord of light (tune Veni Sanct Spiritus - Samuel Webbe) words translated by Edward Caswall, which is in Celebration for Everyone 261. We sing it as a congregational hymn in the right place. Works well.
So do we. The congregation join in with enthusiasm.
