Re: Pipe Organs and Organists - Dying out?

I'm delighted to say that the Walker Organ at St Thomas of Canterbury, Rainham, Kent has now been fully renovated. As well as renovating the entire organ, revoicing the pipes, adjusting wind pressures, increasing key resistance, Sheppard & Cross have installed new digital electrics with multi-ch...

Re: The wickedness of face cream

From today's first reading:

If he offers his life in atonement, he will see his hairs.

Re: Antiphonal Singing of Latin Plainchant Mass Settings

AGM, thank you for the clarification and correction. And thanks to everyone else for their comments. As with so many issues we all have our own personal preferences and the pleasure of this forum is that we can examine and debate them in a friendly way!

Antiphonal Singing of Latin Plainchant Mass Settings

There has been comment about this under another topic, so I thought it might be interesting to start a debate. It has become fairly common that, when a Latin plainchant mass setting is used, it is sung antiphonally, the choir alternating with the congregation. I assume that this is a hangover from t...

Re: ADOREMUS

I was there! All parishes were invited to send delegates and to support their delegates in prayer. So some priests are clearly at fault for not informing their parishes about this Bishops Conference initiative which was requested by Pope Francis... Both Archbishop McMahon and Cardinal Nicholls expre...

Re: Liturgical Tourism

I won't say where this was but I attended an Assumption Day Mass at 10.00 this morning where there was no homily despite there being two deacons on the altar as well as the celebrant (who wore a biretta). No Creed. There were no Bidding Prayers. There was no Offertory Procession, the 'Blessed are yo...

Re: WANTED wedding psalm

I don't know if this helps but the refrain to the Taize chant 'Adoramus te Domine' fits 'Let all praise the name of the Lord'. Though it's best if you include the hum before the words start!! Then for the verses you could use any Psalm tone chant in a suitable major key. If the refrain is sung twice...

Re: WANTED wedding psalm

I assume the booklet is finalized so the words can't be changed? Of course the hymn 'Praise my soul the King of Heaven' is a paraphrase of this...

Re: Clericalism?

Huge subject this, but some (not all) ordained ministers see themselves as a class apart, with authority from On High. So they will manage their parishes and liturgies with minimal involvement from the laity. And many laity (I include myself) disregard vast areas of Church Teaching anyway as being j...

Re: A rather delightful Kyrie and Agnus Dei

Should a Kyrie ever be delightful? Discuss. Why not? We are asking for mercy but hoping in the promise that our prayers will be answered! We're not supposed to be miserable when fasting, so why should we always be miserable when asking for mercy? On the other hand, try convincing Mozart of that whe...

Re: Hymns for Confirmation?

'Walk in the light' is in Laudate, though strangely not in the Pentecost section. It seems to be one of those where each parish has its own version. There is also a hymn called 'Holy Spirit of Fire' which is, I think in Hymns Old and New.

Re: VENI CREATOR

Seems bizarre to omit the last verse given the symbolism of having 7 verses in this hymn. Pentecost is one of the few times where a 7 verse hymn is sung in full in our parish; not sure what the people make of it though!

Re: Ascension Day

I think Corpus Christi was on a Thursday because the Last Supper was on a Thursday. Processions were often held on the following Sunday. The route of the one in Bridport in the 1950s must have been nearly a mile long. It involved enthusiastic singing, rose petals, and a hellfire sermon with Benedict...

Re: Mary, Mother of the Church

These feasts were instituted too late to get into the 2018 Ordos so they won't be celebrated in most parishes. Feasts do tend to come and go as the years pass and perceptions change: the Circumcision of Our Lord and Our Lady of Ransom went in the 1960s. On a really nerdy note, these new feasts haven...

I just hope they've made up their minds now and don't go changing it again in a few years' time. And the SSG Liturgy Planner was incorrect.
