Re: Settings of the new Missal texts permitted from Easter 2

At the meeting Martin Foster mentioned that the use of musical settings of the new texts will be permitted from Easter 2011. From liturgy office FAQs Other settings of the new translation may be published after Easter 2011 and the Department for Christian Life and Worship has permitted that they ma...

Re: New organ at Our Lady of Lourdes Wanstead London

It seems that the reed stop synonymous with Basoon is beeped out. Anyway, the batting order for the recital is: Prelude and Fugue in D DIETRICH BUXTEHUDE (1637 – 1707) Chorale Prelude “Nun kom, der Heiden Heiland” J.S. BACH (1685 – 1750) Toccata and Fugue in D minor Introduction and Trumpet Tune WIL...

New organ at Our Lady of Lourdes Wanstead London

Our Lady of Lourdes, Wanstead E11 2PR, has recently had a new pipe organ installed. Its a 2 manual, 18 stop built by Robin Jennings. NPOR suggests the previous incumbent was a 1 manual Mander. Re: The New Texts: Events for Parish Musicians

The thought of having to have something ready for September, with no rehearsals during August, and nothing published yet is well nigh impossible. The ICEL approved missal chants are ready, and as the liturgy office website says, this "setting of the Ordinary of the Mass proves a good, foundati...

Re: Music and Liturgy Issue 340

I agree that it is a good issue, covering a wide range of issues and tapping a much wider range of authors (and indeed viewpoints) than usual.

Preaching

In his 'Parish Practice' article in this week's Tablet, Nicholas Henshall asserts: "Preaching is at a low ebb in our culture. Many congregations have ceased to expect good preaching altogether" Is this true? I'll start the ball rolling by simply saying that, if I have spoken to my brother ...

Re: The New Texts: A Seminar for Composers

You're kidding, Nick! Things are a lot worse than you imagine, in a lot more places. And probably worse than that! Of the 3 Sunday Masses here, one has no music, another music only one Sunday in a month, and the third has music every week but its stuck in a time-warp. When the musicians are way, th...

Going to have to think of a way to record the Missal Tone Preface Dialogue, Mystery of Faith, and Doxology for the PP to practice as well.

Re: The New Texts: A Seminar for Composers

I don't think the seminars are supposed to be a shop window for whatever the composers might be presenting of their own ...which is something of a shame. Without this, the event is only of interest to a few erudite souls. The rest of us are just desperate for new music. But as Q has pointed out, th...

Re: How many planners?

.... but in reality its easy "my favourite hymns" to be picked. It also runs the risk of what a former PP called 'keyword triggers': ending up with five different settings of psalm 23 in a Mass because the first reading makes a passing reference to sheep, even though psalm 23 has nothing ...

Re: How many planners?

I too think planning by committee doesn't work, certainly not in the details. But, as Nick says, in a parish with several music groups there would need to be co-ordination. I know of a parish where each Sunday of the month is looked after by a different music group and don't know if there is any con...

Re: So where are we now

When do we have to ditch all our responsorial psalms? Not yet. Should have those for another 3 years Not necessarily. If Grail IV is approved for liturgical use, then it will be usable immediately, Does "usable immediately" mean that current versions must no longer be used? in this case a...

Re: So where are we now

Were I still involved in planning music, I would introduce the new Gloria in September as a first thing. This would give it time to settle before its Advent break and be familiar enough to be remembered for Christmas. New sanctus and/or memorial acclamation could come later in the year, possibly eve...
